From deep in the vaults of Apollo Records comes this sensational collection of 1949 artifacts by the veteran pianist, along with sides by singer St. Louis Jimmy, young pianist Willie Mabon, and two unissued sides by guitarist Jimmy Rogers (including a pre-Chess rendition of his seminal "That's All Right"). Slim's mighty roar shines on "Brown Skin Woman," "I'm Just a Lonesome Man," and "Bad Times (Cost of Living)," all from the emerging heyday of the genre. ~ Bill Dahl

House Rent Party songs
$13.85 The boastful title is no exaggeration; this is a welcome return for the classic Chicago blues sideman, who, primarily because of the misfortune of his music being exploited by other musicians, took a self-imposed retirement for nearly 30 years. It's especially rewarding since Williams -- whose work you hear on early Howlin' Wolf, Otis Spann, Bo Diddley, Billy Boy Arnold (who guests here) sides -- hadn't played a lick during that time, keeping his guitar stashed under his bed. He sounds like he never put the instrument away on this album, the first cohesive disc under his own name ever. Aided by comparative youngsters Tinsley Ellis, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and Rusty Zinn, along with ...
| | Memphis Slim Come Back CD (2002)
House Rent Party album
$14.69 Like John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim was very much a label-hopper -- from the '40s to the '80s, it was safe to assume that the singer/pianist wouldn't stay at one label for too long. In the '50s, Slim did some of his best work for United, a Chicago-based indie whose catalog has since been acquired by Delmark (another Windy City label). Slim's United period of 1952-1954 is the focus of The Come Back, a 20-track collection that Delmark assembled in 2002. This is a blues CD that has both jazz and rock appeal. Slim, like Jimmy Witherspoon and T-Bone Walker, was always a very jazz-influenced bluesman -- his love of jazz comes through on vocal gems like "Call Before You Go Home" and "5 O'Clock Blues" as well as free-spirited, improvisation-minded instrumentals that include a previously unreleased performance ...

House Rent Party CD music
$15.65 If there is just the slightest occasional hesitation in Jay McShann's singing on these tracks, which were recorded live at Toronto's Montreal Bistro on February 2, 2001 for CBC Radio One's Saturday Night Blues show, and if he occasionally doesn't really lock into the groove until the rest of the band (Jim Galloway on saxophones, Rosemary Galloway on bass, and Don Vickery on drums) jumps in, the real miracle ...
| | Phideaux Fiendish CD (2003)
House Rent Party music CDs
$15.19 Phideaux is an artsy rock project which harkens back to the era when albums were the ruling force and not just a dumping ground for filler and the "one good song". A plethora of guest musicians flank host Phideaux Xavier and his drummer Richard Hutchins as they unleash a beautiful sonic assault on their new album "Fiendish" (Bloodfish ZYZ 1001). Cellos, theremins and oboes abound on this album which has strands of Pink Floyd, Moody Blues and David Bowie (think Polyphonic Spree). Phideaux and Richard have worked together for many years making a hybrid of "classic" classic rock and post punk artrock music. Also available "Ghost Story" the latest installment. ...
