THE WOMAN IN ME won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Any Man Of Mine" was nominated for Grammys for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. Shania Twain was nominated for the Grammy for Best New Artist.
The low, sultry voice of Canadian Shania Twain serves her well on THE WOMAN IN ME. This is a compact collection of middle-of-the-road country, warped by the rock influence of Twain's producer/husband, Mutt Lange.
Twain is not just a singer; she also co-wrote most of the songs with Lange, and they run the gamut from soft ballad to reeling rock. The opening track is a slow, slurry ballad that would be just as comfortable on the adult contemporary charts as on the country charts, and is reminiscent of Bette Midler's style of balladeering.
The single "Who's Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" is a bouncy shuffle that could bring Twain to the forefront of country music. Her vocal is pure country, straight from yesteryear, a matured Brenda Lee. But with thick, rock-oriented production, there isn't much, besides Twain's twang, that labels this album "country."

Woman In Me
$6.85 When Shania Twain's self-titled debut came out in 1993, it was impossible to predict the impact she would soon have, not only on country music but on the pop world as well. She hadn't yet hooked up with producer/hubby Mutt Lange, so there's less pop crossover material here than on her subsequent releases. Instead, mainstream country is the order of the day: romantic ballads colored by appropriately sorrowful-sounding steel guitar, and perky up-tempo ...

| | Morel Queen Of The Highway CD (2002)
Woman In Me
$13.95 Putting a face on the often-anonymous thump of club music can be a dicey proposition. Where others have tried and failed, though, star remixer Richard Morel succeeds, with an impressively ambitious debut loaded with pop hooks, a bit of rock swagger, and the propulsive beats you'd expect from a pal of DJ team Deep Dish. But what makes the project unique, and supplies its darkly decadent veneer, is the lyrics, which delve into homoerotica and America's shadowy fringes with intelligence and storytelling skill. There's a sense of fatalism that infects even the should-be smash hit "Ride," a hip-hop-fueled love song that reminds its intended "If I should die/You got someone real tough to watch out for you," but there's no arguing with the narrative gifts behind the gorgeously seedy "All of the Pretty Ones," a trumpet-laced, deep house meditation on life as a hustler. The combination of ear candy and genuine smarts on display here is rare indeed; rarer still is to find dance ...
| | Jaga Jazzist Livingroom Hush CD (2001) (Import) United Kingdom
Woman In Me
$12.55 A Livingroom Hush is the debut by Norwegian jazz/electronics outfit Jaga Jazzist, released in the United Sates on Ninjatune a year later. A Livingroom Hush is simply one of the most enigmatic outings to ever come out of either genre (and how many times can you say that?). Realized after the group had been together for nine years and led by the stunningly original compositions of Lars Horntveth (who began composing for the group when he was 14 in 1994), A Livingroom Hush is so deeply ingrained in its ensemble textures and striated harmonics that Jaga Jazzist almost never sounds like a big band. A horn section of winds, reeds, and brass, keyboards galore, drums both real and imagined (electronic), vibes, glockenspiel, electric guitars and bass, electronic keyboards, tape recorders, and a slew of other things give them the edge on virtually anyone who has attempted the same thing: a seamless blending of creative jazz with electronic exploration and beats. Yes, ...
