(1 Customer Review)
Although it never appealed to mainstream rock audiences, Bolt Thrower wasn't quite as extreme as some of the other bands on England's metal-oriented Earache label (which signed a distribution deal with Combat in the early '90s). Compare Warmaster to Carcass' very hardcore Symphonies of Sickness, and you'll see that this blistering death metal release is a bit more accessible. Lead singer Karl Willetts favors the type of choked, grunting vocals that underground grindcore bands were known for, but unlike such bands, Bolt Thrower isn't always heard at breakneck speed. Bolt Thrower often slows down the tempo, making the morbid lyrics to "The Shreds of Sanity," "Destructive Infinity," and "Profane Creation" easier to understand. Despite Bolt Thrower's limitations, this is a CD that seasoned thrash fans will find invigorating. ~ Alex Henderson

Warmaster album
$12.95 This is the album that started it all for Twisted Sister. With the group's classic lineup complete and producer Pete Way (of UFO and Waysted fame) at the helm, TS put to wax its early club material and in the process came up with one of the greatest hard-rock debuts ever.
"What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)," with its hypercharged metal riff, has been the band's concert-opener for years. "Bad Boys (Of Rock 'n' Roll)" is a testosterone-fueled singalong with a great hook and lead guitar lick. "Shoot 'Em Down," which received some airplay upon release, features the furious riffs and anthemic qualities that would characterize much of the band's material through the years. "Destroyer" is as heavy as heavy gets, while the title track was singled out by Tipper Gore's P.M.R.C. for being about sado-masochism and bondage (in reality, it's about guitarist Eddie Ojeda's throat operation). "I'll Never Grow Up Now!" is a rebellious teen anthem of independence. UNDER THE BLADE is for all die-hard metal aficionados and for those fans only familiar with "We're Not Gonna Take It."

| | Overkill Under The Influence CD (1988)
Warmaster CD music
$10.45 Originally released in 1988, Under the Influence is another confident, if unremarkable Overkill recording. Highlights include the punk-ish "Overkill III (Under the Influence)," as well as trademark pseudo-thrash numbers like "Shred," "Never Say Never," and the minor hit single/video "Hello From the Gutter." One subtle, but very consistent problem with Overkill's brutal riffing sticks out just a little bit more than usual on Under the Influence. That is, the clanky ringing and exaggerated attack of bassist D.D. Verni's instrument. Verni bogs down the group's sound, weakening Overkill's otherwise tight and unified rhythmic signature. As usual, the real problem with Under the Influence is vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth's overdone vocals. Ellsworth is a singer of rare ability, but his cartoon approach ...
