If you believe that punk rock started around 1975, the year 2000 would mark its 25th anniversary. At the end of the 1990s, not many of the early punk bands were still together -- the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned, Sham 69, and the Dead Boys had long since broken up. But punk's influence remained strong; young punk bands were still emerging, and countless alternative rockers claimed punk as a major influence even if they weren't punk artists per se. Recorded in December 1999 and January 2000, this self-titled Distillers CD is a throwback to the raw, in-your-face aggression reminiscent of late 1970s/early 1980s punk. While fast and forceful cuts like "L.A. Girl," "Oh, Serena," and "Girlfixer" aren't innovative or groundbreaking by 2000 standards, they're exhilarating and inspired -- this enjoyable, if uneven, date lets listeners know that hardcore punk still has possibilities in the 21st century. The person who brings the Distillers' lyrics to life is lead singer Brody Armstrong, whose screaming, jagged vocals are definitely on the abrasive side; no one's going to mistake her for Enya anytime soon. Armstrong was only in her early twenties when this CD came out, which means that ironically, she wasn't even born when the Sex Pistols were formed in 1975. Not perfect but certainly respectable, The Distillers reminds everyone that punk has yet to outlive its usefulness. ~ Alex Henderson

Distillers album
$10.65 The Washington, D.C. straightedge hardcore punk scene began with Minor Threat. The band recorded two LPs on its own Dischord label, plus an EP and the miscellaneous singles that are collected on this CD. Many of the early recordings on this collection seethe with teen-age angst and indignation. The songs rage against bullies, religious hypocrisy, and the herd mentality.
Other songs, taken from later in Minor Threat's career, feature tighter and more sophisticated playing. Metallic flourishes tinge the guitar work, vocal harmonies abound, and song dynamics vary more than on the earlier record. On certain songs, Ian MacKaye's lyrics address the complexities of friendship, loyalty, and self-expression. "Look Back and Laugh," "Little Friend," and "It Follows" all incline more toward introspection and ambiguity; conveying loss and sadness in addition to outrage. This second set of songs seems to especially anticipate MacKaye's later work with Fugazi. The album also contains a few playful numbers like the sing-along cover of "Stepping Stone," and "Cashing In," a mocking dig at greedy musicians. Minor Threat believed completely in the power of its music, helping earn a loyal fan following ...
| | Lacuna Coil In A Reverie CD (1999)
Distillers CD music
$13.85 On its 1999 full-length debut, IN A REVERIE, the Italian goth-metal ensemble Lacuna Coil offers up a melodic yet moody set of songs that prefigures the successful formula of Arkansas's Evanescence by years. While the group features both male and female vocalists, singer Cristina Scabbia often steals the show with her expressive voice, which is equally effective on amped-up, guitar-driven tunes ("My Wings") and orchestral, ...
| | Lacuna Coil Unleashed Memories CD (2001)
Distillers music CDs
$12.85 Lacuna Coil's second full-length album successfully combines the backbone of metal with the ethereal trappings of goth. While vocalist Cristina Scabbia gives the band their sonic calling card, additional vocals from the group's male singer, Andrea Ferro, add tonal variety and balance. Rarely succumbing to heavy-handedness, Lacuna Coil escapes the stylistic straitjacket of the goth/metal formula, making them more accessible than many of their peers. The special-edition release includes the band's ...
| | Distillers Sing Sing Death House CD (2002)
Distillers songs
$10.45 Principally recorded at Westlake Studios, Hollywood, California between May and June 2001.
This authentic, damaged, street-kid punk outfit boasts the magnificent, mouth-full-of-marbles gutter-punk accent of Brody, wife of Rancid's Tim Armstrong. (Both slur their vocals in a similar fashion.) Improving on their very fine, self-titled debut album, their latest, Sing Sing Death House, is battle-scarred and resolute, but Brody's tough voice is more expressive than your average punker's and especially affecting when she flaunts the full range of her throaty snarl. On "Seneca Falls," an appreciation of the women's suffrage movement set to chugging guitars and a thumpity-thump bass, there's an exceptional, goosebump-inducing though unintelligible chorus, which soars above the music because of the emotional quality of Brody's howl. Otherwise, the music is quite stirring, coming from a gang of gutter-punks with lip piercings. The song "The Young Crazed Peeling" is about having a crap upbringing, surviving, and actually becoming a happily married punk. After telling the story of how her mom kicked her dad out of the house because he beat her up, Brody goes on to sing about how life has gotten better, "I love a man from California/He's the prettiest thing/We got the same disorder/The way you feel is okay/It's never going to change anyway/It hit me/I got everything I need." It's a story with an uncharacteristic ending that punks born of squalor can rise up and create ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Distillers album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance ...
| | Distillers Coral Fang CD (2003) Exco
Distillers CD music
$10.45 A fiercely passionate juggernaut of punk-fueled rock & roll, CORAL FANG goes straight for the throat from the opening surge of "Drain the Blood." The Distillers are the street-worn vehicle of Brody Dalle, who exorcises her former surname, Armstrong (as in Tim Armstrong of Rancid), in almost every hard-charging song on FANG. As far as break-up albums go, this one's a doozy, largely due to Dalle's gargled-with-gravel voice, which makes Courtney Love sound like a dainty 10-year-old schoolgirl.
Impressively, Dalle's self-penned tunes match her gutsy singing, and thanks to her proficient band and Gil Norton's muscular production, certain tracks sound like they could be outtakes from Nirvana's IN UTERO, most noticeably the stomping "The Gallow Is God." Other songs--such as "Dismantle Me," "Die on a Rope," "Love Is Paranoid," and the title track--pulse with a faster, frantic punk energy, while "The Hunger" leads off with an acoustic guitar and "For Tonight You're Only Here to Know" is propelled by a catchy, new wave guitar ...

| | T Rex Futuristic Dragon CDs (1976) (Import) Deluxe Edition; United Kingdom
Distillers CD music
$22.99 The 1997 reissue of FUTURISTIC DRAGON features 3 additional tracks that did not appear on the original release; "London Boys," "Laser Love" and "Life's An Elevator."
By the mid-'70s, Marc Bolan's T. Rex had fallen on hard times. Bolan, who remained the essential element in the band, began experimenting with soul/funk sounds and collaborating with his wife, singer Gloria Jones, with mixed results.
While 1976's FUTURISTIC DRAGON didn't hit the charts as hard as T. Rex's earlier classics ELECTRIC WARRIOR, SLIDER, and TANX had, it finds Bolan back on track. "New York City" turned out to be one of Bolan's final U.K. hits before his untimely death one year later. Other highlights include the orchestrated instrumental "Theme for a Dragon," and the upbeat power pop of "Chrome Sitar."
1976 re-issue of "Futuristic Dragon" complete with bonus disc of alternate ...
| | Children Of Bodom Hate Crew Deathroll CD (2003) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Distillers music CDs
$36.99 Four albums in and still whacked on speed, Finnish five-piece Children of Bodom continue with its highly entertaining, giddy, pogo-stick metal on Hate Crew Deathroll. Attitude-wise, CoB has become the Manowar of melodic death metal, willfully leaping off the cliff of over-the-top metaldom (not unlike Swedish supergroup Witchery) -- which is refreshing, considering the poker-faced seriousness of most acts in the genre, and here, main Bodom-ite Alexi "Wildchild" Laiho keeps his tongue firmly in cheek while tearing through squirrelly cuts such as "Triple Corpse Hammerblow" and "Lil' Bloodred Ridin' Hood." Like its predecessor, Follow the Reaper, Hate Crew finds Laiho firing off frantic speed metal riffs and technical, shred-heavy solos alongside humorously irritating prog/horror movie keyboards; this time, however, he has tightened up the arrangements (most songs clock in under four minutes) and significantly improved the enunciation of his vocal screech, making for a lean, mean, and infectious listen. The album races to the finish of its 36-minute running time, only slowing down for deathly ballad "Angels Don't Kill" and highlight "Sixpounder," which trades busy fretwork for hackle-raising mid-tempo riff chuggery and a monstrous, sweeping, anthemic chorus. Adding to the album's effectiveness is its crisp, crystal-clear, sharp, and mechanical production (Megadeth's stellar Countdown to Extinction is a reference point), which perfectly suits CoB's slice'n'dice songwriting ethic. Hate Crew Deathroll is easily the band's most accomplished, well-rounded, and enjoyable album, thanks to Laiho's playful, frisky approach to metal's clichés; placing Children ...
