SHE HAD A TASTE FOR MUSIC features Italian film music composed by Armando Trovajoli, Nico Fidenco, Franco De Gemini, Gianfranco Plenizio and Teo Usuelli.
Subtitled "Rare Gems From the Italian Erotic Archive," this compilation collects a selection of mostly instrumental tunes with a lounge music edge from obscure Italian films. Much of She Had a Taste for Music is devoted to romantic mood music: "Voce D'Amore" sets a wistful, wordless solo female vocal against a gently jazzy backdrop dominated by yearning strings and tinkly keyboards, while "Make Love on the Wing (Instrumental)" backs up its ethereal synthesizer melody with cooing background vocals and gentle, tribal-sounding percussion. Some of the cuts pursue their amorous approach in a surprisingly graphic manner: the gentle keyboard-and-bass groove of "La Via Della Prostituzione" is nudged along by the sound of a woman's orgasmic moans of pleasure, and "Piacere Sequence M36" spices up its jazzy saxophone melody with a woman endlessly chanting the word "sexually" in a tone of voice that grows from a whisper to a frenzied scream. Despite the generally erotic tone of this compilation's music, She Had a Taste for Music occasionally throws in a stylistic curve-ball to keep things interesting: "Cheops and Nefertiti" is a frantically-paced jazz tune driven by a male/female scat duet, and "Kinky Peanuts" layers a bizarre, squiggly-sounding synthesizer line over a thick backdrop of Brazilian-sounding percussion. Ultimately, She Had a Taste for Music lacks the consistent tone of Italian lounge compilations like the Easy Tempo series, but it offers up enough intriguing oddities to please anyone who has already developed an appetite for this style of music. ~ Donald A.
