THE SOUND OF MUSIC BY PIZZICATO FIVE compiles material from Japanese records dating back to 1993's BOSSA NOVA 2001.
Beautifully packaged in a minimalistic white Digipak overlaid with a clear plastic band cryptically announcing "Music is organized by sound," 1995's THE SOUND OF MUSIC looks considerably more elegant and mysterious than the amusing retro-kitsch graphics of Pizzicato Five's 1994 U.S. debut, MADE IN USA. Like its predecessor, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a compilation, gathering almost equally from two Japan-only releases, BOSSA NOVA 2001 and OVERDOSE. But where MADE IN USA hedged its bets by focusing on the Japanese duo's most straightforward English-language tracks, THE SOUND OF MUSIC kicks off with the bizarre BYE BYE BIRDIE homage "We Love Pizzicato Five" and dives headfirst into giddily hyperkinetic pop-culture-in-a-Cuisinart romps like "Groovy Is My Name" and "If I Were a Groupie." Quotes from Bacharach, Barry White, disco, the Beatles, and Kraftwerk enliven Yasuharu Konishi's slyly ironic tunes, and singer Maki Nomiya makes them her own. This album is a delight.

Unknown Contributor Role: John Klemmer.Spin (12/95, p.118) - 8 - Very Good - "...this Japanese duo is cute, kitschy, cuddly--what Hello Kitty might sound like....The sound is now a little less funky, a bit more thumpy and considerably fuller and jazzier..." Entertainment Weekly (11/3/95, p.65) - "...While their retro tendencies lend a patina of kitsch to the proceedings, they go at it with a sophistication and polish that sidesteps cheese. In other words, they mean it." - Rating: B+ Q (2/96, p.101) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...bulging with brilliantly executed retro-pop..." Melody Maker (6/15/96, p.43) - "...I love Pizzicato Five. If you do, too, then you are my friend. If you don't, you will. Oh yes, you will." Musician (11/95, p.95) - "...the only thing standing between the P-5 and stardom is that they sing in Japanese....the heart of the P-5's sound is its giddy, grab-bag blend of '60s pop, '70s soul, and '90s alterna-chic. That needs no translation..." NME (Magazine) (6/22/96, p.54) - 6 (out of 10) - "...P5 spin in a storybook orbit where every day is a potential magazine cover, where kitsch is king, and where fame and fortune are just the flick of a feather boa away....[THE SOUND OF MUSIC] collects all manner of musical styles..." | Sound Of Music By Pizzicato Five Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Catchy kitschy A very happy collection of kitsch melodies and finger-popping music...makes you feel good to listen to music with no other purpose but to groove. This is what house music would have been like in the 60's!!!! Submitted by a reviewer (Western New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
Good for first-time listeners Pizzicato Five(or P5 for short) have two
hits collections that are very popular:
this record, and another called 'Made In The USA'.
Well, they're not really hits collections,
more like short-term perspectives - but certainly hits to their fans. This album
contains songs that run the Gamut from the
Burt Bacharachish 'Fortune Cookie' to
the Le-Piz-does-60's-PopJazz 'Rock and Roll'. I personally don't care much for the four or five disco tunes here, but like all
the other fans of this group, I'd rather hear their worst than what's on the radio.
If you want to put some new spark into your life, with highly polished and energetic music like you've haven't heard since the
good old days, then this album is for you.
**Consumer Warning*** - most of these songs are in Japanese. But, P5's music is truly international, and once you get hooked you will not notice the difference. In fact, at some point you WILL try to mimic the words.
Sincerely,
James Burn

$9.39 This 17-track Polygram Records album, The Best of the Casablanca Years, is really a grouping of songs taken from two previous albums, Take Me Home and Prisoner. The tracks were then spliced together on this spring 1996 presentation that was produced by Ron Dante and Bob Esty. Many of the tunes on this offering are fun, or at the very least out of the norm for Cher. Some of the entertaining songs on the recording are "Hell on Wheels," "Shoppin'," "Boys and Girls," "Holy Smoke!," "Wasn't It Good," and "Outrageous." All in all, an amusing album filled with many dance-style songs. A good one for Cher fans to add to their music collection. ~ Charlotte Dillon
This CD combines two of Cher's disco albums, 1979's Take Me Home and 1980's Prisoner, on one compact disc. Although these are certinaly not among her best albums, it's a nice way for serious fans to acquire both albums on CD. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Cher's The Best of the Casablanca Years collects all of her hit singles from the late '70s, and there weren't that many. Only three singles charted in the Top 100 and only one -- the number eight "Take Me Home" -- cracked the Top 40. So, the rest of the collection is padded with album ...
