Like ... Full Descriptionmany of his counterparts in the 90's wave of Japanese rockers, Keigo Oyamada (a.k.a. Cornelius) is well-versed in the history of pop as it leads up to the here and now. And for the most part, the likable genre-jumping antics of FANTASMA, his third full-length that works as a US debut, pigeonhole him as a somewhat more schizophrenic Beck. He gets crazy with not just the cheeze wiz, but 3D microphones, Meredith Monk-like vocal overlays, drum'n'bass beats, kitschy keyboards, and a mound of samples, ingredients for a pop-cult salad nonpareil.
Where Cornelius dazzles though, is in his musical default function, which is wisely set on psychedelic indie-pop. The droney, driving "New Music Machine," for instance, cobbles together a bleeding lo-fi aesthetic out of 48 tracks worth of background vocals, analog synths and, above all else, drums 'n' guitars. And "Seashore and Horizon" shuttles between such a seamless Pet Sounds vibe of acoustic guitars and choral arrangements and kooky magical mystery pop burn-out, that you can almost smell the members of the Elephant 6 collective molding with envy.
3rd Rel;Rel In Japan Last YearSpin (5/98, p.134) - 6 (out of 10) - "...an exuberant kaleidoscope of hip-hop, noisecore, film soundtracks, cheesy listening, indie rock, even Sesame Street....an endearing music-obsessive-comes-of-age tale--from Saturday morning TV to arena rock to bootleg Jean-Jacques Perrey reissues..." Magnet (p.78) - "FANTASMA sounded like PET SOUNDS made anime....It left all contemporaries in a cloud of crate-digging dust." The Wire (1/99, p.27) - Included in Wire's "50 Records Of The Year [1998]" CMJ (1/11/99, p.7) - "...With its ground-breaking collage of beats, Beach Boys-style harmonies, lounge-y fluff and noisy guitars, the record revisited and re-examined the pop music's storied history..." Vibe (5/98, p.144) - "...FANTASMA is brilliant. Cornelius's innovations will definitely excite futuristic B-boys and rockers alike..." Option (5-6/98, p.81) - "...a visionary, visual sound that's as generous as it is lavish..." Hide Description Cornelius Fantasma Songs | 1. | Mic Check |

| Fantasma Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) cornelius' best a solid cd the whole way through Submitted by peter7431 (maryland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Awesome Cornelius brings a brilliant and multi-sound texture album with "Fantasma". It's soft in tracks like "Chapter 8" and noisy in "Count 5 or 6". All the styles (rock, pop, electronic, lounge, even polka) mixed up in one superb cd. It's not quite commercial, but "Fantasma" represents a different musical proposal nowadays. brilliant truly a desert island disc, one of those recordings that's essential in the actual meaning of the term. fantasma takes you on a trip across an imaginary pop radio dial and into the mad-scientist audio laboratory of its creator. styles and pastiches ranging from brian wilson to arena rock to hardcore punk to psychedelia swarm over you intoxicatingly, seducing you into a bit of musical paradise. while the initial 4 or 5 songs alone are fantastic, the entire cd is an euphoric joy. if you're looking for simple signposts and "influences", be ready for a torrent of synaptic connections and recollections: brian wilson, beck, cheap trick, david bowie, tv cartoons, science fiction movies are just a taste of what this "planet of the apes"-obsessed genius references in the fine fantasma. | | Chickenfoot CD (2009) Digipak
Fantasma CD music
$13.05 In true old-school "supergroup" fashion, Chickenfoot is a hard-rock dream team. Composed of vocalist Sammy Hagar (Montrose, Van Halen), bassist Michael Anthony (Van Halen), drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani, the combo grew out of a few impromptu jams, but the combination was judged strong enough to record an album and go on tour. The resulting disc is a ...
| | Michael Jackson Invincible CD (2001)
Fantasma music CDs
$8.49 "You Rock My World" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
The question for a 42-year-old Michael Jackson heading towards the end of 2001 was whether or not the self-proclaimed King Of Pop could make his presence known on the charts after having spent much of the '90s laying low. If the chart-topping position achieved by INVINCIBLE is any indication, then the answer is a resounding yes. The album is primarily produced by Jersey wunderkind Rodney Jerkins, and Jacko wasted no time tapping other top-flight artists and knob-twirlers to help out, including Teddy Riley, Babyface and R.Kelly.
Michael pulls out all the stops here, whether peppering the opener "Unbreakable" with his trademark falsetto and a posthumous rap from the Notorious B.I.G, or recruiting guitar great Carlos Santana to contribute some tasty playing to the Latin ...

| | Michael Jackson Number Ones CD (2003)
Fantasma album
$22.55 The 1990s may not have been kind to Michael Jackson on a commercial level, due to fickle music tastes and assorted personal controversies, but NUMBER ONES reinforces Jackson's place in pop culture history. Unlike its preceding compilation, HIStory, this anthology trims the fat, although occasionally going overboard in leaving off certified chart-toppers like the Paul McCartney duet "Say Say Say" in lieu of lesser-known, latter-day fare like "Earth Song."
That said, casual fans of the Gloved One will still feast on plenty, ranging from dance classics like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock with You" from 1979's stellar OFF THE WALL to the singles that powered the industry-shifting THRILLER and BAD. Among the hits featured here are "Beat It," (with its tour de force Eddie Van Halen solo), the scathing "Dirty Diana" (with Steve Stevens substituting for Van Halen), and catchy title cuts from the aforementioned albums. Meanwhile, Alien Ant Farm fans get ...

Fantasma CD music
$8.29 After DESTINY'S opening thumping baseline, funky guitar chords, and Michael Jackson's hiccuping "heeee-heee-heeee," there's only one sensible thing to do--blame it on the boogie. Or blame it on the Jacksons' 1978 platinum-selling album for being so damn good. The tenor of the times was finally right for the band, and everyone involved is on top form. With songs all written and produced by the Jacksons, the emphasis is on booty-shaking music with heart and real soul. Within a year Michael Jackson's OFF THE WALL album, on the charts for 52 weeks, would make him a force to be reckoned with. But on DESTINY, Michael's passion and desire ...

| | Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium: Special Edition CDs (2006) Parental Advisory; Limited Edition; Boxed Set
Fantasma album
$91.99 An ambitious double album, STADIUM ARCADIUM finds the Red Hot Chili Peppers building on their more mature, latter-day approach, while also acknowledging their lighthearted, youthful sound. The Los Angeles-based funk-rock quartet's third studio outing since John Frusciante returned to the fold, this 2006 release once again reinforces how crucial the guitarist is to the Peppers' aesthetic, with his mix of swirling, psychedelic leads and heavy riffs providing the perfect foil to Flea's bold bass heroics. (Instrumentally, the record also benefits from guest appearances by Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez, percussionists Paulinho Da Costa and Lenny Castro, and the legendary Billy Preston on clavinet.)
Remarkably consistent for a two-disc, 28-song offering, STADIUM ARCADIUM kicks off with "Dani California," an energetic track that hints at a Beatles influence, while showcasing vocalist Anthony Kiedis's neo-rap delivery and the tight rhythmic interplay of Flea and drummer Chad Smith. Other highlights of this collection include the emotive "Wet Sand" and the frenetic "Torture Me," which provide nice counterpoints to loose, limber tunes such as the funk workouts "Hump De Bump" and "C'mon Girl." In many ways a culmination of the Chili Peppers' decades-spanning musical evolution, STADIUM ARCADIUM stands as one of the group's most impressive efforts.
