(3 Customer Reviews)
1995's NOT A PRETTY GIRL synthesizes elements of Ani DiFranco's six prior albums and is widely considered one of this wildly prolific Buffalo, New York-based singer/songwriter's finest efforts. Here, the folky acoustic starkness of ANI DIFRANCO and NOT SO SOFT meshes with songs that recall the detailed full-band arrangements of LIKE I SAID and OUT OF RANGE. DiFranco even remakes an earlier song, IMPERFECTLY's "Coming Up."
Lyrically, the album also refines topics previously covered. There's the abortion drama "Tiptoe," the sneering record-business diatribe "The Million You Never Made," and a passel of songs that touch on DiFranco's outspoken bisexuality (notably "Light of Some Kind"). The difference is that the pieces fit together more smoothly than before. The relative lack of jagged edges makes the powerful emotions of the songs that much more intense. NOT A PRETTY GIRL is a masterpiece of '90s folk-rock.
Recorded at The Recording Complex, Buffalo, New York and 1:2:1, Toronto, Canada.
Personnel: Ani DiFranco (vocals, acoustic, electric & steel guitar, thumb piano, bass, percussion); Andy Stochansky (vocals, drums, percussion); Kate Fenner (vocals).
Rolling Stone (8/24/95, pp.102-103) - 3.5 Stars - Good - "...Judging by NOT A PRETTY GIRL, few have done battle with the vigor, determination and brooding honesty of Ani DiFranco, a talented and fiercely independent singer/songwriter..." Sing Out! (Vol.41 #1, pp.130-132) - "...all of Ani's expression comes together on this, her latest archive of passion....She writes songs informed by urban despair and sexual politics..." Ani Difranco Not A Pretty Girl Songs Not A Pretty Girl Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Awesome
ALLS I GOTS TO SAY IS ANI ROCKS MY WORLD, SHE IS SUCH A GREAT SONG WRITER!! I HAVE EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HER CDS... AND YOU SHOULD TOO!! Submitted by clarinetist09 (Emporia, KS, OF COURSE!!) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Ani Difrancos Not a Pretty Girl Album Ani Difranco is quiet an inspiration, she always writes exactly what she feels, no less and no more. She is an awesome musician and a talented person. She will definitely go much farther in life and make more great albums with terrific music. All of her albums have already been a success and I own all of them, from "Knuckle Down" to "Educated Guess". They are the best music I've ever heard, and if you don't like one CD, the theme of others are all different-- that's what makes them so good. DEFINITELY WORTHY Ani Difranco's albums have always been marred by thin production...mostly by stubbornly refusing to make "commercial" recordings. This especially a shame for "Not A Pretty Girl", her best work to date. A lot of the songs on here are "big" songs, but only partly get off the ground. First rate narrative songs like "Cradle And All", "Sorry I Am", "32 Flavors" & "Crime For Crime" don't have the music to carry the ambitions of the words. Nevertheless, this captures the excellent songwriting Difranco is delving into. Submitted by a reviewer (Allentown, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$12.89 Expanding musically beyond the folk-rock-ish guitar pop of its two immediate predecessors, NOT A PRETTY GIRL and OUT OF RANGE, Ani DiFranco's seventh album in six years adds Hammond organ, synthesizer, bass, and even trumpet to what was once a stark musical vision. Though DiFranco supplies much of the instrumentation, longtime drummer Andy Stochansky and a few other collaborators assist.

| | Martin Lass: Sonnet CD (2002)
Not A Pretty Girl music CDs
$7.18 No one disliked categorization more than Duke Ellington, who used to argue that there are only two types of music: good and bad. But realistically, a certain amount of categorization is necessary. If an artist's music is going to sell, it has to be marketed and promoted -- and part of the marketing/promotion process is describing the music you're trying to sell. Martin Lass is one of those artists whose music isn't all that easy to categorize. A classically trained violinist, Lass provides gentle instrumental music that has a strong classical influence (although it isn't classical per se) and occasionally has hints of Celtic folk. For the sake of convenience -- and for marketing purposes -- Lass has been described as new age, which is probably just as well because Sonnet is calm enough to appeal to the new age market. And when one sees words like "healing" in the liner notes, it is obvious that Lass is going after new age audiences. Although Sonnet is the violinist's first U.S. release, it isn't his first album -- before Sonnet, he recorded eight CDs that were released in Australia. If Sonnet is essentially new age -- and new age is as good a description as any -- it's important to know what type of new age it is. The term new age is a lot more far-reaching than it was in the '80s; it is used to describe everything from spacy, atmospheric, electronic sounds to rhythmic stuff with world music leanings. Sonnet is an example of the more classical-influenced new age, and even though the material falls short of mind-blowing, all of it is pleasant and sincere. ~ Alex Henderson
Martin began the violin (classically) at the age of eight, after being inspired by Yehudi ...

| | Orixa Siembra CD (2005)
Not A Pretty Girl album
$12.49 In the early nineties, back in the San Francisco Bay Area, Rowan Jimenez and Juan Manuel Caipo met at a local music store. Jimenez was looking for a drummer and Caipo for a lead singer. Soon after, they realized that they shared the same vision of starting a band that would break both Latino and Rock stereotypes. The band that grew out of that vision is oriXa, (which means "forces of nature"), now recognized as one of the strongest, most important Independent Latin Alternative acts in the United States. oriXa signifies roots and evolution, sonically and musically. Their sound draws from a multitude of styles, ranging from Rock, Reggae and HipHop to Brazilian, Funk, and Afro Latino. "We play many styles of music, oriXa-style...we interpret and add our own touch" says Caipo. Imagine the rock edge of Led Zeppelin and Jane's Addiction fused with the rhythmic flavors of Ruben Blades and Busta Rhymes, and you've got the powerful, melodic vibrations known as oriXa.It is 2005 and on February 8th Orixa will release "Siembra", the bands 3rd album. "Siembra" brings the fusion of sounds Orixa is known for but highlights the bands new lineup. Rowan Jimenez, Juan Manuel Caipo, and newest members Michael Cavaseno on Guitar and Charles Gasper on Bass have put together what is being considered Orixa's best work to date. The album was produced by Caipo mostly in his home studio. "Siembra" features some great guest musicians such as the master Karl Perrazo (Santana) on Congas, Emiliano Benevides on Brazilian Percussion (Batmakumba). There is this fine line of fusion in the music where the band brings Zep like guitar riffs over a Rock Batucada type groove such as in "Fuerza" to a melodic smooth vocal melody with a melancholy guitar riff over a funky Hip-Hop groove as in "Cuando Era Nino". "We've grown and we are not afraid to try different things and sounds that we like" says the band. The video for the first single "Siembra", directed by Uruguayan cinematographer Leonardo Ricagni, is currently on rotation on MTV-es. Leonardo approached Orixa after checking out a live performance at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles as part of the Latin Alternative Music Conference in 2003. At the time Orixa was hard at work developing material for the album "Siembra". "It was a great opportunity to do a video so we went for it", ...
