| | Dave Holland Extended Play: Live At Birdland CDs (2003)
Composition No. 96 CD music
$21.19 EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the same page, better to imagine they all ...
| | Eric Dolphy At the Five Spot, Vol. 2 CD (1961) Remastered
Composition No. 96 music CDs
$8.79 Recorded live at The Five Spot, New York, New York on July 16, 1961. Originally released on Prestige (7294).
The 2009 reissue of Eric Dolphy's landmark AT THE FIVE SPOT VOL. 2 includes two bonus tracks, "Number Eight (Potsa Lotsa)" and "Booker's Waltz," which originally comprised the Eric Dolphy-Booker Little MEMORIAL ALBUM, released posthumously in 1964.
Reed player/composer/arranger Eric Dolphy was, in the early '60s, in the vanguard of the free jazz movement, yet his music was not as avant-garde as some of his contemporaries'. Dolphy played with a freer, more vocalized approach, yet he did this over more or less standard chord changes.
Recorded in 1961, the AT THE FIVE SPOT series of albums documents what may have been Dolphy's finest group ever, as well as one of that era's best working bands. ...

| | Best Of Van Morrison CD (1990) (Import) Australia
Composition No. 96 songs
$17.09 Includes songs from Van Morrison's days with the group Them (1964-66) and his solo career.
Digitally remastered by Ian Cooper & Tim Young (Metropolis Mastering, London, England).
Who doesn't know all the words to Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl?" Sing along to all your favorites on THE BEST OF VAN MORRISON featuring the bonus track "Days Like This."
They very wisely opted against calling this GREATEST HITS for obvious reasons, yet such a good package of songs only highlights the fact that they all could have been massive hits. Maybe it's becaus Van is a very private man and unlike Phil Collins or Eric Clapton, does not grant interviews often. Yet he is up there with the greatest of all time. His catalogue is one of the finest in popular music, and in choosing a best of CD the choice will be ultra subjective. This gets near to the mark, even though there is no "Madame George," "Listen To The Lion" or "Tupelo Honey." There we are again, purely subjective. The alternative is to have a standing order made out to purchase one Van Morrison album for the next 24 months.
