Sahara CD music An intriguing violinist with strong technique and a highly expressive style, Miri Ben-Ari is a strong improviser whose playing often hints at Eastern and Indian music. Sahara music CDs On the evidence of her debut, she already ranks close to Regina Carter. Performing a set of her originals plus "Dream" and "Rejoice" (the latter by her keyboardist), Ben-Ari is heard at her best on a diverse set which includes a few lightly funky numbers, some atmospheric pieces, and a heartfelt version of "Dream. Sahara songs. Released in 1998, this is a side project to drummer Guigou Chenevier's band Volapnk. Both other members from that trio (reed player Michel Mandel and cellist Guillaume Saurel) are a part of the assembled band here. Chenevier wrote the bulk of the material, and it relates nicely to his other work, drawing from Eastern European melodic traditions, cabaret, chamber music, small combo jazz, and even a bit of progressive rock. The tunes are each rich with their own unique character and all are relatively short. It's as iconoclastic as all of Chenevier's projects (his first recorded band was the amazing trio Etron Fou le Loublan). This music refuses to adhere to any particular existing boundaries, but at the same time it is very friendly and inviting. The highly composed core of the music is as alluring as the musical characteristics of each of the seven musicians on board.
