With Alanis Morrisette and Fiona Apple burning up the charts, the mid- to late 1990s were more than friendly to angst-ridden female rockers. One of the most compelling "angry young woman" releases of 1997 was Holly McNarland's Stuff, which gives the impression that the Canadian singer/songwriter lives and breathes dysfunction. Expressive and convincing, McNarland packs a strong emotional punch on "The Box," "Coward," "Elmo" and other tortured, introspective offerings that leave little or no room for optimism. At times, McNarland's intonation brings to mind Sheryl Crow, though her anger and sadness make Morrisette and Apple more valid comparisons. Stuff isn't a CD to listen to when you're in the mood for lighthearted escapism. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Butch Walker I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart CD (2010)
Stuff CD music
$11.80 The day that Butch Walker runs out of melodies will be a dark day indeed, but he shows little sign of decline on his fifth solo effort. Like Sycamore Meadows, this album finds the 40-year-old Walker in a contemplative, autobiographical mood, referencing everything from his hair metal past to his Los Angeles home. It's ostensibly a breakup record, too, with a rather despondent title and another sad, Southern-styled ballad, "Don't You Think Someone Should Take You Home," that sounds like the companion piece to 2008's "Here Comes The." If Walker is heartbroken, though, he doesn't show it during some of the album's best songs, from the roots rocker "Trash Day" to the shuffling "Temporary Title." Bad feelings also don't prevent him ...

$11.49 yet another adventure down the road of our musical life. this was recorded at Barry's "Running Horse" in nottingham england a great venue for any band. we had just finished a three month tour in europe and we recorded this at the end. we had a great time as usual. we just mixed it and here you have it... we decided not to 'fix it' in the studio with overdubs so there is the human element there. we aren't a pop band and needless to say some nights are ...
