On her second album Draw Them Near, Boston-area singer/songwriter Jess Klein has broken free from the comparisons to gypsy chanteuse Stevie Nicks. Backed by an alt-country all-star band featuring drummer Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo), bassist Brad Jones (Ron Sexsmith,Matthew Sweet), and guitarist Will Kimbrough (Kim Richey,Josh Rouse), Klein punches out tough, soulful songs while maintaining a sugar-sweet voice. Similar to folk heroine Lucinda Williams, her childlike singing style belies a sharp tongue that speaks of lost love and injustice as easily as it sings a lullaby. The only detraction from this little gem is the angry bump and grind of "I Sure Would," which seems out of place with its stark drum loop and barked lyrics. Aside from that, beautiful sleepers like "Song for an Angel" and the title track nestle in next to upbeat numbers like the stomper "Little White Dove" and the Stax-influenced "Love Is Where You Find It" for a moving and diverse listen. ~ Zac Johnson

Draw Them Near album
$12.35 For their second album, Sonny and Cher largely dropped both the overt Spectorisms and derivative folk-rock of their debut, 1965's LOOK AT US, instead refining the two into an utterly unique blend. There were few protest songs as dazzlingly-arranged as "Laugh At Me," originally released as a Sonny solo single. The follow-up "The Revolution Kind," included as a bonus track, shows the political leanings which would eventually get Sonny elected as a Republican congressman.
Much of the album consists of covers--"Summertime" a la the Zombies' breathy version, "Tell Him," "I'm Leaving It Up To You," etc.--all given the inimitable Sonny and Cher treatment. ...
| | Deep Six CD (1966)
Draw Them Near CD music
$14.29 Imagine the Mamas & the Papas without the arranging prowess of John Phillips or the powerful voice of Cass Elliot and you get a pretty good idea of what the Deep Six sounded like. During their brief existence, they released one self-titled LP in 1966 on Liberty. Over three decades later, the U.K.-based Rev Ola label not only reissued that rare collector's item, but also included five non-LP cuts, rare photos, and excellent liner notes. The light, if somewhat generic, folk-rock arrangements and close harmonizing are pleasant enough on the majority of tracks; versions of "A Groovy Kind of Love," "Where Were You When I Needed You," and "Solitary Man" fit the band's smoothness to a tee. A few missteps are also included, especially the overtly far-out hippie vibe on "C'mon Baby (Blow Your Mind)," or ...

| | Association Live CD (1970)
Draw Them Near songs
$12.69 This 75-minute album, originally a double-LP (recorded live at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on April 3, 1970) is a valiant attempt at capturing the Association's concert sound on record. Unfortunately, it fails for several reasons, beginning with the fact that the instrumental mix is very bass-heavy -- even with adjustments to compensate, this overwhelms much of the rest of the band on several key numbers. Additionally, the group's singing, though more than adequate, lacks the presence needed to give their harmonies the necessary radiance to make the music fully attractive, coming off instead as anemic. The real problem is that cutting a live album was a thankless task for this group -- so much of their sound was dependent on a studio-driven perfection -- that live recording was an exercise in futility (let's put it this way -- the Beach Boys pulled this off more than once, but they had a resident genius around part of the time doing their arrangements; the Association: no genius in the ranks). "Goodbye Columbus" is a case in point, it's a breezy, cheerful number that gets a spirited performance, but it still sounds thin and emaciated because the single is the way that song is supposed to sound, period. By contrast, their rendition of "Get ...
| | Strangeloves In The Night Time CD (2003)
Draw Them Near album
$6.45 This mid-line disc consists of half the material available on the definitive Strangeloves compilation, 1995's I Want Candy: The Best of the Strangeloves. However, parties looking for a concise package should note 2003's In the Night Time, which offers the Top 40 entries "Cara-Lin," "I Want Candy," and "Night Time" in addition to sides from their sole 1965 long-player and several single-only tracks from 1966 and 1967. In a practically Spinal Tap-ian mythology, they were promoted as (get this) wealthy Australian sheepherders whose infatuation with rock & roll had driven them to abandon their flocks and set out to create the sounds they loved. In typical American-made hype and true to form, the public decided to scream now and ask questions later. The reality of the Strangeloves ...
