| | Johnny Vicious Ultra Dance 01 CDs (2002)
Nyc Underground Party music CDs
$14.79 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Johnny Vicious.
The inaugural volume in the Ultra Dance series rounds up many of the most popular dancefloor songs in America for one non-stop flurry of big hits. The New York record label invites Johnny Vicious to mix the tracks as best he can. They also give him the opportunity to mix a second disc of more cutting-edge tracks. The tracks on this second disc aren't anywhere near as popular as those on the first disc of this two-disc set. Ultra appropriately tags the first disc as "Main Floor" and the second as "Underground." Of the two, the first is most interesting, not so much because it offers nothing except hits but rather because you wonder how Vicious mixes such a set. He begins with Nelly Furtado, Jessica Simpson, and Amber -- granted, these are dancefloor remixes -- before moving to the album's gem, iio's "Rapture," a song that perfectly blends pop and dance without compromising either. From there, Vicious moves toward more eccentric fare like Green Velvet's crazed "La la Land" and PPK's powerful "Resurrection." The second disc foregoes recognizable tracks for more "underground" ones. Here you sense that Vicious is playing you the records he wants to play, mostly progressive tracks that substitute the pop attributes of songs ...

| | Louie DeVito Ultra Dance 04 CDs (2003)
Nyc Underground Party album
$15.85 This is a coninuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Louie DeVito.
The fourth installment of Louie DeVito's continuing mission to bring together the cream of modern dance music has a distinctly Euro flair, as evidenced by the remix of Kylie Minogue's sister Dannii's high-energy "I Begin to Wonder" and the Weekend Players' frothy, ecstatic "Into the Sun," with its gorgeous, Sade-tinged breakdown. With the dreamy remix of BT's "Simply Being Loved," you'd think the 1990s had never happened, while Dana Rayne's "Object of My Desire" ups ULTRA DANCE 4's ante and tempo in a moody, mysterious remix.
Things start getting sweatier over on disc two, hitting an early high with the inclusion of Andrea Doria's "Bucci Bag," while Motorcycle's "As the Rush Comes" provides a slamming fourth quarter rush. The emphasis here is more on remixes of contemporary dance tracks than DeVito's previous releases, which blended revamped obscure dance tracks with tried-and-true favorites. ULTRA DANCE 4 finds DeVito confidently spinning and mixing a collection of classics that looks to the future while rooted in the bedrock of dance.
The world's most popular dance DJ meets the world's best dance brand! Louie DeVito ...
| | Louie DeVito Nyc Underground Party, Vol. 6 CDs (2003)
Nyc Underground Party CD music
$7.39 Right in line with the first five volumes, NYC Underground Party, Vol. 6 makes for an excellent collection of floor fillers of the moment. DJ Louie DeVito's pacing just keeps getting better and better and he really is living up to the "underground" tag here, pulling out some quirkier tracks than usual. Granted, superstar P. Diddy gets a spin, but it's a sultry Deep Dish mix, a fact that annoyingly gets buried in the liner notes like all the remixes here. Disc one is seamless, but what really makes the collection great is a second disc ...
| | Count Basie Basie Jam 2 CD (1976)
Nyc Underground Party music CDs
$9.89 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Count Basie is best known for his big-band swing orchestras. But BASIE JAM 2 finds the legendary pianist "jamming" with an all-star octet. In truth, Basie's music has always been based around spontaneity and fun-the hallmarks of the jam session. Basie, the consummate entertainer, always encouraged playful, extended improvisations from his sidemen.
BASIE JAM 2 is consistent with the acclaimed bandleader's credo. Soloists Benny Carter, Al Grey, Clark Terry, and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis should require no formal introduction. These four jazz greats have developed highly personalized styles of improvisation, influencing an entire generation of players. Their keen and insightful improvisations-sometimes sensitive, sometimes bold-epitomize modern jazz at its best. All of the musicians heard on the distinctly blues-based BASIE JAM 2 render excellent performances. Standout tracks include ...
| | Jools Holland's Big Band Rhythm & Blues CD (2002)
Nyc Underground Party songs
$9.09 Although this is nominally credited to Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, really this is a 22-track various-artists compilation with Holland's ensemble serving as the house band. The lineup of old and new, superstar and cult talent is impressive, even if many of them are past their prime: Sting, John Cale, Stevie Winwood, Taj Mahal, Jamiroquai, Paul Weller, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Van Morrison, Paul Carrack, and Eric Clapton are some of the artists given a track. Holland has described his music as big band blues, and that's an apt description for a good deal of the songs, whether it's Sting's "Seventh Son," Taj Mahal's "Outskirts of Town," or Morrison's "Back o' Town Blues." Actually, though, some of this is soul, AOR rock, or ska. That doesn't necessarily count as a strike against the record, it just makes the groove less consistent. There is a consistent, hepped-up party mood, though one that's unrelenting yet slick enough so that it's rather like a party that tries too hard to succeed and goes on too long. Certainly it will attract the most attention for George Harrison's "Horse to the Water," his last recording (done shortly before his death in late 2001). Harrison was a great musician, but this is not a great or good track; the song isn't much, and his voice, unfortunately, sounds like it's in faltering shape. For the most part it's amiable and unmemorable, hitting its finest note on Steve Winwood's "I'm Ready," in which he (or someone, the part is not detailed in the credits) rips out some organ work straight from the spirit of his Spencer Davis Group days. The ska cuts by Suggs and Jamiroquai actually make for a nice change of pace from the grand blues strutting. There are also some missteps that might have been better left uncontributed, like Paul Weller's cover of Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round in Circles" and Stereophonics' version of the Beatles' "Revolution." ~ Richie Unterberger
Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra and Friends. The 2001 studio album features 22 duets with some of the most influential and famous musicians in the world, including Sting, Paul Weller, Stereophonics, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, David Gilmour, Taj Mahal, Ruby Turner, Jamiroquai.
