Tradition and innovation go hand in hand on Ivers's surprising, fresh, and impeccably played solo recording. ~ Steve Winick
Eileen Ivers, on her debut album, Eileen Ivers, shows remarkable inventiveness while still standing on the firm ground of traditional Irish music. From folk to rock and Ireland to Africa, Ivers spices up contemporary, traditional and original tunes with guitar, saxophone, zither, viola da gumba and hammond organ. This is serious fun. The beautiful tune "Nagh Seola" becomes a jazz ballad duet. On "Pachelbel's Frolics," Ivers deconstructs this classical piece into a driving hoedown. A more talented, adventurous musician on the Irish music scene would be hard to find. ~ MusD

Traditional Irish Music album
$14.59 On Quake, downtown cello boss Erik Friedlander teams up with Japan's fraternal rhythm section the Takeishi brothers (Stomu and Satoshi on bass and drums, respectively) as well as alto saxophonist Andy Laster for a date of intimate, knotty new jazz. In working with an electric bassist in this setting, the opportunities for unique tonalities are everywhere and are exploited to some degree as they were on an earlier work, The Watchman. Over the years, however, Friedlander has become a composer of interesting ensembles and Quake's is no exception. What is so remarkable about the performances on this recording are details such as counterpoint; on the opener, Laster and Stomu have equal opportunities to engage ...

| | Celtic Christmas III CD (1997)
Traditional Irish Music music CDs
$6.09 From the opening track's mournful oboe, cor anglais and uillean pipes it's obvious this will be an excursion into a Celtic evening. But what starts out engaging enough, with David Arkenstone's artful blending of synthesizer and pennywhistle to the vocals of Triona Ni Dhmohnaill and Lisa Lunne's Celtic harp, soon turns dark. The tunes conjure images of the season, mournful ones for the most part, such as James McNally's "Black is the Colour" and Patrick Cassidy's concluding "Lament," though Paddy Glackin and Micheal O Domhnaill's "The South Wind" and Brian Dunning and Jeff Johnson's "A Raven in the Snow" lighten it somewhat. Still, no matter how well it's played or how soulful it is, it's pretty depressing for Christmas music. ~ Ross Boissoneau

Traditional Irish Music CD music
$14.69 Internationally acclaimed singer, musician, storyteller, bard, Danny O'Flaherty's infectious performance captivates audiences worldwide."Unfiltered and heartfelt, Danny o'Flaherty's music is the product of an intensely personal enthusiasm that makes his work dramatically different" Brian MacQuarrie, Boston Sunday GlobeThis irrepressible Irish musical wizard has an astonishing knack for teasing reluctant audiences with a twinkling roguery and bewitching city sophisticates into following him down a country glen, or letting the salt air from Galway Bay cleanse the spirit as it washes over the cliffs. Danny O'Flaherty's appeal is universal; his music evokes the rich tradition of the past seamlessly woven into haunting contemporary ballads. "Ireland is my love. It's where I am when I am singing; Folk music is the music of the people. I love it. I breath it. It's the music that tells you the truth."Danny O'Flaherty has traveled far from his boyhood home in Gaelic speaking Connnemara, in western Ireland, to the French Quarter of New Orleans, home-base of O'Flaherty's Irish Channel Pub. There have been numerous stops along the way: a five week tour of Israel culminating in ...
