Originally issued on the Electric Lemon label in 1973, Circus Clown Calliope! and its sequel, Circus Clown Calliope! Vol. 2, have fascinated record collectors ever since mainly because of the somewhat frightening cover art, reminiscent of the hellishly degraded, greasepaint-caked community depicted in Bobcat Goldthwait's 1992 motion picture, Shakes the Clown. Indeed, the clown with a rhinestone pasted to the end of his false nose looks like he's ready to bite and possibly devour any child placed in front of him, while the sad, bedraggled clown who posed for the cover of Vol. 2 emanates clinical depression and dipsomania. Happily, the vintage Tangley calliope heard throughout this compilation was operated by none other than Verne Langdon, an apparently well-adjusted individual whose knowledge of classic circus entertainment is magnificently displayed over no less than 31 tracks. Naturally, some of the material evokes the splendor of classic vaudeville and old-time jazz music. Composed by Jack Newton, "Oriental Blues" was used as a theme song by the great Ernie Kovacs. The general feeling of the piece is so suggestive of the musical landscape of the early '20s that even seasoned traditional jazz heads could easily mistake it for something originally recorded by King Oliver, Johnny Dodds, Bix Beiderbecke, or the New Orleans Rhythm Kings. Other selections drawing upon the early jazz and pre-jazz repertoire are "Glow Worm," "Aba Daba Honeymoon," "The Whistler and His Dog," "Twelfth Street Rag," and "Lassus Trombone." Several of the tracks barely exceed one minute's duration -- Langdon quits "Vaudeville Playoff" after 23 seconds and "Billboard March" at a little more than half a minute. "The Silly Sorcerer" and "Circus Clown Calliope Suite," on the other hand, are epic works that sprawl out for nearly six minutes. While convention would relegate it to the realm of juvenile entertainment, this almost surreal core sample of old-fashioned melodies played on a pneumatic riverboat-era calliope may also be introduced whenever and wherever adults try to take themselves too seriously. ~ arwulf arwulf

Circus Clown Calliope Vol. 1 & 2 Music Review
Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) FEEL LIKE A KID AGAIN - GO TO THE CIRCUS! This is the kind of music clowns dance to, and elephants, horses, monkeys and dogs cavort to. This the REAL sound of the circus, the old-time calliope, played here by expert keyboardist Verne Langdon. It's a Tangley steam calliope he tootles, and it's the circus through-and-through. My favorites are "Aba Daba Honeymoon", "Circus Clown Calliope Suite", "Twelfth Street Rag", and "The Baby Bear Suite". I gave my sister a copy for her son's birthday - it was a hit and has made the rounds of other kids parties since. If you like circus, you'll love this cd. "THE GREATEST CALLIOPE CD ON EARTH!" I am a collector, and own perhaps the largest collection of calliope albums or cds in the world. This one, "Circus Clown Calliope!", is without a doubt the very finest in my entire collection. There are a lot of traditional calliope tunes on here, but others like "The Stripper" and "Circus Clown Calliope Suite" stand out as one-of-a-kind recorded performances. Thirty-one tunes in all - apparently there were two CCC albums and this cd is cut from the original masters of both albums, so nothing is lost. In my entire collection, no recording quality measures up to this one. It's just like being right there next to the steam calliope. I highly - no, EXTREMELY HIGHLY - recommend Circus Clown Calliope! It's all-CIRCUS! Submitted by Max Concello (Sarasota, FLA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great for kids of all ages! My wife bought this cd for a circus birthday party we gave our daughter, who is eight, and she and her friends really loved this music. It's lively, loud, and sounds just like the circus. I think it's really played on a old-fashioned steam keyboard, and gives it the authentic sound. It's a fun cd. If you want something circusey, this is the one. I gave it five stars. Submitted by Gordon B. (Milpitas, CA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
CIRCUS EARFUL TOWERS! Step right up! "Children of all ages", here comes the CIRCUS CLOWN CALLIOPE! It's an old-time Tangley steam calliope (made by circus-type people in Muscatene, Iowa!), and played by master circus keyboardist Verne Langdon to the satisfaction of any and all circus fans the world over! Considered rare among true circus officionados, calliope "poofery" is an art-form well-captured on this masterfully-mastered (by Brian Friedman)CD. Engineer Paul Elmore captures every high and low without distortion and near-perfection, and the bright & shiny melodies themselves gleam like the gold-leaf on a hand-carved circus wagon!! Classics like Cabaret, Lassus' Trombone, Goofus, Song of the Nairobi Trio, Twelfth Street Rag, Aba Daba Honeymoon, Barney Google, Carousel Dreams, even The Stripper are faithfully performed here in classic clownish calliopery (!) in composit cacophony suitable for ANY three-ring circus under the big top! (2 CD's in one yield 31 great tunes.) Clowns everywhere love this CD, use this CD, and are funnier because of it. Music lovers collect it, circus fans call it the finest calliope recording(s) ever made, and YOU will agree. Step right up...get yer CIRCUS CLOWN CALLIOPE!, VOLS 1&2. HURRY!!!!
