Like many forms of world music, Native American music has both its traditionalists and its innovators. The innovators are coming up with interesting Native American/worldbeat hybrids; they are forward thinkers who combine Native American elements with rock, funk, pop, dance music, or even hip-hop, and they might use a synthesizer or electric guitar alongside traditional Native American flutes and percussion (just as some Arabic pop artists will use a synthesizer or electric guitar alongside an oud). Meanwhile, the Native American traditionalists do things the old-fashioned way and don't incorporate non-Native American influences. Northern Cheyenne Flute is an enriching example of traditional Native American music --specifically, Native American music with a Northern Cheyenne orientation. Joseph Fire Crow is a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe, and his main instrument is the flute (although he plays shakers and Native American drums as secondary instruments). Fire Crow also provides some wordless vocal chants, although this CD (which was recorded in Bismarck, ND) is mostly instrumental. There is no rock, funk, or hip-hop influence on Northern Cheyenne Flute; Fire Crow's approach is strictly traditional, and he plays his flute with a great deal of feeling and emotion. His performances, in fact, are as haunting they are spiritual. Like a lot of traditional spiritual world music -- Hindu music from India, Buddhist music from China, among other things -- Northern Cheyenne Flute has a very hypnotic quality. In Native American culture, innovators and traditionalists both have their place (just as jazz should be able to accommodate everything from fusion to Dixieland). Northern Cheyenne Flute isn't cutting-edge, but it's certainly captivating. ~ Alex Henderson

Northern Cheyenne Flute CD music
$13.49 On his second Adventure Music release, Sete Capelas (Seven Chapels) -- and follow-up to 2004's critically acclaimed Cris on the Farm -- Rio based guitar master Marcos Amorim gleefully explores the subtleties and intricacies of numerous jazz-based idioms, from maracatu to jazz, samba and even funk. The opening track, "Coisas Demais por Fazer (Many Things to Do)," shows the lighter, bright samba side of his personality as he ensembles beautifully with guest flutist Nivaldo Ornelas. The wind is so prominent on this track that it's possible for uninitiated listeners to think it's a Brazilian flute project -- but from the second track, the hypnotic, polyrhythmic, and sweetly soundscaped "Sonhos Indianos (Indian Dreams)," Amorim perfectly defines his deft acoustic guitar style. The journey of the "seven chapels" of the album title is one of numerous moodswings, as he shifts into a melancholy, reflective state on "Bolero por Jaco" (with the help of Ney Conçeicao's seductive bassline) and "Rio Tranquilo," before swinging back to the optimistic, gently toe-tapping "Pedra da Sorte." "Luz Da Lua (Moonlight)" is low-key, but its subtle samba magic, complete with tender brushes, makes it one of the disc's most inviting ...
| | Southside Johnny Jukes CD (1979) Remastered
Northern Cheyenne Flute music CDs
$13.09 1978's Hearts of Stone was a superb distillation of everything Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes had been trying to do with their music in the early years, and when it failed to sell significantly better than its predecessors, it signaled some major changes for the band. Steve Van Zandt was out as producer and principle songwriter (he was also busy with his other gig in Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band), and the group moved to Mercury Records, who released The Jukes in 1979. Barry Beckett of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section produced The Jukes, and his approach seemed designed to sand off some of their rough edges; tunes like "Paris" and "Time" are smoother and more polished than anything the band had cut up to this time, and "Security" and "Vertigo" sound more like late-'70s soul than the beer-soaked hard rhythm & blues that had been their stock in trade. While Johnny Lyon and the rest of the Jukes sound as good as ever, the album's clean, compact surfaces don't give them much room to connect, and the power the group brought to Hearts of Stone and I Don't Want to Go Home is largely missing. It also doesn't help that the Jukes didn't have as good a songwriter as Van Zandt on hand to take their mentor's place; guitarist Billy Rush takes up most of the slack, but while he understands the Jukes strengths, his lyrics are often trite and the melodies aren't ...
