(2 Customer Reviews)
The Vajrayana, or Diamond Teachings, of Tibetan Buddhism encourage the celebration of life and the ardent pursuit of enlightenment. Cutting straight to the heart of these aims are Vajra chants. These deeply moving songs of healing and protection are presented here with keyboard embellishments and occasional percussion.
Tibetan Buddhist musical master Lama Gyurme and French composer Jean-Philippe Rykiel offer eight different chants (and an extra "unplugged" version of one) on this follow-up to their beloved 1996 collaboration THE LAMA'S CHANT. This time around, Rykiel's keyboards and other musical accompaniment take a more prominent role. Dramatic synthesizer chords support Gyurme's bass tones, while the gentle strums of a kora (African harp) weave in and out of almost every line. Percussion livens up the healing "Medicine Buddha Mantra" and acoustic piano shows up in "Offering Chant." While Rykiel's music is often quite moving, Gyurme's vibrant incantations feel like a rain of blessings in and of themselves.

Rain Of Blessing: Vajar Chants CD music
$12.39 On the Winter Park, Florida based band's Myspace site, there's a slot for a definition of what they are. A few words sum up everything very succinctly, "Gasoline Heart is rock and roll." No argument from the get go on that, as Louis Defabrizio's edgy vocals rise over Joey Bradshaw's jangly guitar fire on "Move Along," and Jeff Irizarry's insistent drum intro ushers in the throbbing and energetic "Cheers (Here's to Life)." The more contemplative, mid-tempo anthem "All the Way" shows off a cooler side of Defabrizio's voice -- for about a minute, before the guitar explosion kicks in. Then that sensitivity moves to the forefront ...
| | Bill Wence Songs From The Rocky Fork Tavern CD (2007)
Rain Of Blessing: Vajar Chants music CDs
$10.79 Bill Wence kicks off Songs from the Rocky Fork Tavern with the easy rocking "Angelene," a likable song that captures the tension between true love and the open road. The lyric looks back with regret, with the narrator coming to terms with just what he's lost; the upbeat cadence, however, sounds as free as the open road, revealing just how attractive the myth of the open road remains, even when it turns out to be empty. "What Do You Think About Me and You" follows, and it's a relaxed, Jimmy Buffett-styled love song. Wence had penned most of the material on Songs from the Rocky Fork Tavern and enjoys getting to the emotional heart of the matter. In "Old Rock and Roller" he tells the tale of an aging musician, committed to his lifestyle though he knows that time is no longer on his side. All of these songs are enhanced by Wence's emotive vocals and a sympathetic, gently rocking band. There are ballads dedicated to love lost like "She's Leavin' for Dallas" and more upbeat paeans to misery like David Oxford/Tommy Allen's "Honky Tonk Heartache." Like Buffett and a number of the better singer/songwriters from the early '70s, Wence has a down-to-earth, non-pretentious manner that makes his music easy to like. With solid songs, arrangements, and vocals, Songs from the Rocky Fork Tavern is also easy to recommend. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.
Bill Wence is a writer, picker, singer and above all, a music lover. Living in Los Angeles in the mid-60's and in the Northwest, and in Alaska in the late 60's, he played music in clubs and shows, as well as getting his start in radio and TV. During this period, Bill was booking shows in Alaska and brought Bobby Bare, Charlie Rich, Ernest Tubb and others to the Capital city. Bill to move to Nashville in 1973 and went on the road playing piano with Tom T. Hall. As a writer, Bill has had Billboard cuts by Ronnie McDowell, Cristy Lane, Bobby G. Rice, Orion and others. He had four self-penned, self-produced and self-promoted Billboard singles in 1979-80, which led people to ask, "Hey, can you do that ...
