| | Ayub Ogada En Mana Kuoyo CD Ayub Ogada Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
When listening to this album, one is struck immediately by the unique sound. The powerful, resonating nyatiti (a stringed instrument similar to the lyre) and Ogada's reflective, subdued vocals are unlike anything you've ever heard. They're also almost the only things you will hear on this disc, the only embellishment being the occasional light percussion or wind instrument. Ogada sings in his native Kenyan tongue, of the beliefs and traditions of his people. "Go far, see the world, but don't forget where you come from," he intones in the song "Chiro," a sentiment he has obviously taken to heart. There are no pounding rhythms on this record, nothing you can dance to, but it is memorable nonetheless, and makes a strong case for the beauty of restraint. ~ Steve McMullen
Personnel includes: Ayub Ogada (vocals, nyatiti, percussion, flutes).

En Mana Kuoyo album
$13.49 All songs written by Ry Cooder and V.M. Bhatt, except "Isa Lei" (Lieut. A.W. Caten).
A MEETING BY THE RIVER won the 1994 Grammy Award for "World-Music Album."
A Meeting by the River can best be described as a spontaneous outpouring of music, unhindered by convention or form, brought into being by musicians so supremely capable that the music is never labored, the technique of their craft always subservient to the final product. Cooder and Bhatt are genuine masters of the guitar and mohan vina, respectively. The latter, an instrument created by Bhatt himself, is a sort of hybrid between a guitar and a vichitra vina, and is played with a metal slide. This fact is just one of the many things that connect Bhatt's playing to Cooder's, who plays nothing but bottleneck guitar here. The musical interplay between Cooder and Bhatt is nothing short of astounding, especially so considering that they met for the first time only a half-hour before the recording of this album. The voices of the two instruments blend marvelously, first alternating melodic statements, then doing so together, each dancing around the other, playing cat and mouse, probing, answering, reflecting. They are ably accompanied by a pair of percussionists: tabla ...
| | Bob Marley Kaya CD (1978) Bonus Track; Remastered
En Mana Kuoyo CD music
$10.45 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York)
Marley is in a mellow and happy mood as the album opens with "excuse me while I light my spliff" on "Easy Skanking" and maintains the feeling throughout. "Kaya" has one of the best bass riffs of any Marley song (played by the wonderful Aston "Family Man" Barrett). The hit single "Is This Love" is included and he sounds upbeat singing "She's Gone," although the subject is that his lover has just left him. Nothing fazed him; he was able to address political and emotional subjects with the same degree of feeling and his manner was truly saintly. KAYA is one of his finest moments.
Kaya continues what has become an unspoken tradition in the evolution of Bob Marley & the Wailers' discography -- blending Western sounds ...

En Mana Kuoyo album
$9.89 This 1991 followup to 1987's successful CANCIONES DE MI PADRE continues Linda Ronstadt's innovative musical exploration of her roots. Once again, producer and arranger Ruben Fuentes is on hand to provide authentic orchestral accompaniment to classic Mexican songs handpicked by Linda and her brothers, who sing together as a trio on several tracks. The orchestra is also bit smaller this time, which perhaps accounts for Ronstadt's greater confidence in presenting this delightful material. What strikes the listener again is how different Ronstadt sounds performing this material. She swoops and sways and twists her syllables ...
| | Best Of The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem CD (2001) Remastered
En Mana Kuoyo CD music
$7.59 Recorded between 1961 and 1969. Includes liner notes by Earle Hitchner.
This is actually the best of the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem in the '60s, rather than a career-spanning anthology. All but one of the tracks were recorded between 1961 and 1969, the exception being "Johnson's Motor Car," recorded in 1987 and released in 1994. The Clancy Brothers found their greatest popularity in the '60s, though, so this 16-song compilation is a reasonable representation of their most renowned material. Their live sound is emphasized over their studio one, with 11 of the songs culled from ...

| | Paul Soniat Born In New Orleans CD (2005)
En Mana Kuoyo album
$18.99 Born at the old Touro Hospital in New Orleans, Paul Soniat is the son of a North Louisiana school teacher and a New Orleans Frenchman whose family had been in the city since 1727. Paul grew up in Uptown New Orleans on the street that bears his family name. For the past 23 years he has been directing the efforts to turn an old forgotten garden into one of the country's premier Botanical Gardens. A self taught piano player, Paul has absorbed the sights, sounds, and flavor of New Orleans. The CD at first listen is immediately likable. His humor, insight, and ability to capture the essence of his hometown will become evident when you listen to his music. In his title track,"Born in New Orleans", he writes,"couldn't write this song if I wasn't born in New Orleans". Believe me, that's an honest assessment.Although some of his songs were written many years ago, Born in New Orleans ...
