After devoting himself for a time to his operatic aspirations, Andrea Bocelli returns to the milieu where he achieved international stardom. CIELI DI TOSCANA harks back to ROMANZA, his breakthrough 1997 release that captivated a multitude of admirers, and picks up where his last pop album, SOGNO, left off. The album captures the warm-voiced tenor at what he does best: professing the joys and sorrows of love through his heartfelt renditions of lush, ultra-romantic ballads.
Bocelli hews to the winning formula of the earlier discs, relying once again on the songwriting skills of Francesco Sartori and David Foster, among others, for the soaring, dramatic tunes that are his stock in trade. Sumptuously produced songs such as "Mille Lune Mille Onde," "Chiara," and "Mascagni" are evocative soundscapes of Bocelli's cherished Tuscan homeland, tailor-made vehicles for the singer's romantic vocal stylings. Other notable tracks include "L'Abitudine," partnering the tenor with newcomer Helena for the obligatory love duet, and "L'Incontro," featuring Bono in the recitation of a poem written by Bocelli. CIELI DI TOSCANA has the hallmarks of another crowd-pleasing effort by this enormously popular artist.

Though Middle Eastern motifs dominate, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact geographical origin for this music, and the end result is a world music soup of profound implication. Like Peter Gabriel's PASSION, there is a primal beauty to the wailing, soulful cries and textured atmospheres, but where Gabriel's album was drum-centric, Elias's album accentuates beautiful, complex arrangements for voices, strings, and various instrumentation. THE PRAYER CYCLE is intense, unique, and genuinely moving.
That THE PRAYER CYCLE was masterminded by film and television composer Jonathan Elias is almost as mystifying as the broad, incongruous, and wonderfully talented array of musical stars that perform on it. A deeply spiritual and emotionally resonant album, THE PRAYER CYCLE is a collection of prayers sung in choral and solo voice by the likes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Alanis Morissette, James Taylor, Perry Farrell, and Salif Keita, among others. The most popular crossover opera singer of the present day, Andrea Bocelli mesmerizes both classical and pop audiences without compromising his artistic integrity, although on this best-selling 2008 release the Tuscan tenor leans on chestnuts from the Sicilian and Neapolitan canon. Familiar folk songs like "Funiculi, Funicula" and the gorgeous "Santa Lucia" (made famous by Enrico Caruso and, later, Elvis) come to thrilling life here, although the standout may be a joyful rendition of Bruno Cherubini's "Mamma" that will have listeners reaching for the Kleenex.
