Since the advent of acid jazz in the mid-'80s, the many electronic-jazz hybrids to come down the pipe have steadily grown more mature, closer to a balanced fusion that borrows the spontaneity and emphasis on group interaction of classic jazz while still emphasizing the groove and elastic sound of electronic music. For his second album, French producer Ludovic Navarre expanded the possibilities of his template for jazzy house by recruiting a sextet of musicians to solo over his earthy productions. The opener "Rose Rouge" is an immediate highlight, as an understated Marlena Shaw vocal sample ("I want you to get together/put your hands together one time"), trance-state piano lines, and a ride-on-the-rhythm drum program frames solos by trumpeter Pascal Ohse and baritone Claudio de Qeiroz. For "Montego Bay Spleen," Navarre pairs an angular guitar solo by Ernest Ranglin with a deep-groove dub track, complete with phased effects and echoey percussion. "Land Of..." moves from a Hammond- and horn-led soul-jazz stomp into Caribbean territory, marked by more hints of dub and the expressive Latin percussion of Carneiro. Occasionally, Navarre's programming (sampled or otherwise) grows a bit repetitious -- even for dance fans, to say nothing of the jazzbo crowd attracted by the album's Blue Note tag. Though it is just another step on the way to a perfect blend of jazz and electronic, Tourist is an excellent one. ~ John Bush

| Tourist Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Outstanding First heard Rose Rouge on a Lufthansa flight in 2002 but it took way too long to find this CD (Thanks, CD Universe, for your extensive samples). Icing on the cake is that the rest of the cuts are just as good! Submitted by Hal (Denver, Colorado, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.

$15.19 WINNER: \"Best Self Produced CD\", 2008 (South Sound Blues Association).Review by John Vermilyea, Blues Underground Network: \"Every now and then a musical treasure arrives at my door. Not long ago 2 such treasures arrived by the name of \"When The Devil Calls\" and \"Introducing...Son Jack Jr.\", both courtesy of Son Jack Jr., an amazingly talented player and singer of the Delta Blues. Fans of the Delta Blues will quickly fall in love with the unique way Son Jack Jr. offers his special interpretation of that style. \"When The Devil Calls\" and \"Introducing...Son Jack Jr.\" are both hypnotic in nature, and will bring a smile to face and yes maybe even a tear in your eye, especially Track 4 off of \"When The Devil Calls\", If I Should Fall. \"When The Devil Calls\" and \"Introducing...Son Jack Jr.\" are a must have collection for any true fan of the Blues...-------------Review by Jeff Konkel, President Broke & Hungry Records:\"From the opening notes of When the Devil Calls, the sophomore record from Son Jack Jr., one thing is evident: This guy can play. The obvious influence of the prewar blues masters can be heard throughout the record, but Son Jack Jr. doesn’t really sound like any of them. He possesses a strong singing voice and his own distinct songwriting style. Son Jack tends to pack more lyrics into his songs than did his prewar forebears. This rapid-fire approach works well on several songs, particularly the leadoff tracks, “I’m Son Jack Jr.” and “Dance of the Living Dead.” But Son Jack is at his most powerful when he leaves more room for his lyrics to breath, as on the moving “If I Should Fall.” When he allows his guitar to do all of the talking, ...

The group members and songwriters consist of poets Raquel Ramsey, Keith Thompson, President L. La Brie and guest vocalist Rufus Wonder certainly supports that ...
