| | Lee Morgan Live At The Lighthouse CD Lee Morgan Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Recorded live at The Lighthouse, Hermosa Beach, California in 1970.
As Lee himself points out in his on--tape introduction to these three nights of live recording for Blue Note Records, the band had no plans to play anything Lee had already recorded, because, as Morgan mutters, "It just wouldn't make any sense." This sprawling three-CD set does, in the end, include a version of "The Sidewinder," as well as "Speedball," an uptempo blues from Lee's album THE GIGOLO, with Jack DeJohnette guesting. But even these tunes are rendered in a more abstract fashion than the way they were originally recorded, and on the balance of the material here you can feel the effects of the decade loud and clear.
Solos lean towards the exploratory and the cathartic, with the result that no tune clocks in under eleven minutes, and bassist Jymie Merritt's "Absolutions" pushes well past the twenty minute mark. Morgan's generosity as a leader extends beyond providing room to stretch out: with the exception of "The Sidewinder" and "Speedball," all of the material for these three nights was composed by either Merritt, saxophonist Bennie Maupin or pianist Harold Mabern.

Q (10/96, p.184) - 3 Stars - Good - "...as a trumpet prodigy in one of Art Blakey's best editions of the Jazz Messengers at the end of the '50s...the following decade saw him lose ground to other trumpetmen....But in this 1970 recording...he was playing with up-and-comers, recasting old material and stretching out on new stuff..." JazzTimes (9/96, p.100) - "...Lee's quintet was at the peak of its powers, playing in a style that, though generically rooted in the patented hard bop of the various Jazz Messengers groups, also reflected such other trends of the day as funk and modal jazz..." Live At The Lighthouse album
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass line herald the revolution that ...

Despite its rather silly sci-fi cover, 1974's THRUST is a top-tier album by composer/keyboardist Herbie Hancock. On this excellent follow-up to the legendary HEADHUNTERS, Hancock lays into some seriously deep grooves on his Fender Rhodes, and is backed by many of the same musicians from HEADHUNTERS, including bassist Paul Jackson and woodwind master Bennie Maupin.
The opening track, "Palm Grease," is a slick future-funk workout that breaks down into highly percussive passages, while "Actual Proof" coasts along on Hancock's bright melodies, which are enhanced by Jackson's burbling bass lines and Maupin's deft, breezy alto-flute playing. Of the four ...

$9.09 That Bow Wow had dropped the diminutive "Lil" from his moniker was old news by the release of WANTED, his fourth album. WANTED was released shortly after the rapper's 18th birthday, but if there were any questions about the legitimacy of his maturity and worldliness, the song "Big Dreams" should put them to rest. The song's narrative about the ever-present pitfalls of life in the 'hood is brought to life by the searing authority in Bow Wow's voice.
Bow Wow makes the transition to adult MC with ease, which is surprising given that he spent much of his early career in the shadow of his mentor Snoop Dogg. Still, Bow Wow proves himself a skilled prodigy. ...
