TRAVELING MILES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
Throughout the '90s the smoky-voiced contralto Cassandra Wilson has shunned piano accompaniment in favor of close-miked acoustic guitars, evoking a moodily sensual atmosphere in which pop, blues, country and straight jazz vocals all merge together. It helps that Wilson has a distinctly Southern blues cast to her singing, a quality immediately apparent on "Run The Voodoo Down," the funky opener to TRAVELING MILES, her impeccably self-produced homage to Miles Davis.
As is her wont, Wilson has chosen to mix it up on this tribute, setting lyrics to Davis compositions such as "Blue In Green," "Tutu" and "ESP" while reprising two favorite Miles covers, "Someday My Prince Will Come" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." The singer also contributes some of her own welcome originals such as the poppish "Right Here, Right Now," which itself sounds like a tribute to Joni Mitchell, another mentor-spirit hovering over the proceedings. The set closes with a playful reprise of "Voodoo," featuring a sisterly duet with African singer Angelique Kidjo, who sounds right at home.

Cassandra Wilson Traveling Miles Songs Traveling Miles Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Superb A rare portrait of beauty and extraordinary sound. She has her own sound like Abbey Lincoln, Jeannie Lee, Sarah Vaughn, and Ella Fitzgerald. It is like listening to a flower smile. Country Miles Miles Dewey Davis' amazing career is well documented and he might be, not only the most influencial musician in jazz history, but in all of music. There is no shortage of Miles tributes and many of them are very good. Cassandra Wilson brings this blend of Delta blues and country with a spare relaxed feel of which is modern and ancient simultaneously. 'Traveling Miles' is a hall-of-fame level piece of artistry which surprises on every track. There's no praise too high. This is one of the best recordings ever; it's just that good. A Classic! This is one of the best jazz CDs that I've heard in the last 20 years. While so many "jazz" artists are selling out and going to light jazz pop, Cassandra Wilson is remaining faithful to what jazz was meant to be. Her arrangements of classic Miles Davis tunes, as well as others including her own, are unbelievable. The musicianship on this CD is phenominal. The are no words to describe what a pleasure it is to hear someone who isn't afraid to experiment with new sounds while remaining faithful to the old. This CD is a must for lovers of good music no matter what genre your used to. She is also one of the best producers I've ever heard. Traveling Miles
$15.05 WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance and for Best Engineered Album, Non Classical. WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year.
WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing mark ...
| | Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD (1998)
Traveling Miles
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she ...
| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998)
Traveling Miles
$14.99 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s).
The epitome of a 20th Century musician, Herbie Hancock has always traversed wildly divergent stylistic paths, finding his way easily into jazz, funk, fusion, dance-pop and more. His ability to make valid individual statements in all these genres is part of what makes his compositions and performances so rich. So it doesn't seem at all incongrous for Hancock to interpret the work of George Gershwin, redefining much of the Gershwin canon in the process (with assistance from some world-class compatriots). Hancock's stated aim for GERSHWIN'S WORLD is to get inside the pieces, illustrating their essence rather than knocking off rote versions of these standards. Towards ...
| | Cassandra Wilson New Moon Daughter CD (1996)
Traveling Miles
$8.95 NEW MOON DAUGHTER won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
From the opening cut, a jagged, ominous deconstruction of Billie Holiday's classic "Strange Fruit," it's clear that there is something unusual going on here. Cassandra Wilson is essentially coming at pop tunes from a jazz singer's perspective. Of course many other singers, from Nina Simone to Tony Bennett, have done this before; what sets Wilson apart is that rather than making faux standards out of contemporary songs, she uses her jazz chops to approach the material from an entirely new direction. The result is a bold amalgam that is neither pop nor jazz, but owes debts to both traditions.
Producer Craig Street gives Wilson's adventurous tendencies full reign as she goes on to cover Hank Williams, the Monkees and U2. This time Street, who also produced 1993's BLUE LIGHT 'TIL DAWN, focuses a little more on her unusual, ...
