THE BILLY MAY SESSIONS features 40 tracks (5 previously unreleased) Nat King Cole recorded with arranger Billy May between 1951 and 1961. This 2-disc collection includes a 14-page booklet with historic session photographs, complete personnel listings, a discography and an essay by Will Friedwald.

This two-CD set features a variety of tracks that Nat "King" Cole recorded with the arranger and bandleader Billy May throughout the 1950s and early '60s. Cole had been partnered with May by Cole's manager in 1951, after a previous successful pairing with the Stan Kenton's orchestra foundered. The two artists bring out the best in each other, with Cole's jazz grounding finding an echo in May's dynamic arrangements, and May's sentimentality given full rein in Cole's romantic delivery. Early tracks like the bluesy "Walkin'" and I'm Hurtin'" (the latter a revamped country song) are atmospherically jazzy, while the pair's later sides like "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street" and Cole's version of Hank Williams's "Cold, Cold Heart" are pure '50s pop sophistication.

Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California between 1951 and 1961.
