Florida's Iced Earth were swimming against the tide in 1992. At a time when alternative rock was wiping the rock & roll slate clean and putting hundreds of heavy metal bands out of business, seemingly overnight, the band's uncompromising blend of classic metaland thrash (think Iron Maiden meets Slayer) was about as unfashionable as it got. And, to make matters worse, their sophomore effort, Night of the Stormrider, was a full-blown concept album about a man's fall from grace and subsequent questioning of organized religion. Guitarist and principal songwriter Jon Shaffer went to great lengths to diversify the band's already complex sonic palette, adding acoustic guitar passages and atmospheric keyboards to outstanding cuts like "Angel's Holocaust," "Before the Vision," "Pure Evil," and the awesome "Desert Rain." New vocalist John Greely has a good set of lungs and usually manages to keep up with the manic pace, but is clearly the weak link in the band's equation and would not return after this album. All in all, Night of the Stormrider was a solid effort which simply arrived at the wrong time, and, after assessing the general public's indifference, Shaffer would place Iced Earth on ice for almost three years. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

The river Styx has called for me!!!!!!!!!!!!! Many years ago, a good freind of mine intoduced me to Iced Earth by lending me their live album "Alive In Athens". I was instantly hooked. So, when I heard the live version of Travel In Stygian, I had to check out Night Of The Stormrider for myself. I purchased the original japanese version and the re-release. Making them my first Iced Earth purchases. Thus John Greely (their second vocalist) had a bad attitude for the band, he still had some amazing vocals. The first track "Angel's Holocaust" opens up with an amazing orchestral and heavenly kind of thing. The album pretty much takes you on the journey of Stormrider. From his acceptance of his path to his fate in hell, it makes a great story. Travel In Stygian is one of the most astounding tracks on the album. A MUST BUY. energetic, thoughtful metal This CD is so good I purchased two other Iced Earth CDs after listening to it. It has a raw, deep energy with crunching guitars and vocals that are not lame at all. A great CD to listen to in the weight room (+10% to all lifts!). Submitted by Sam (Concord, CA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

ICED EARTH ARE THE ESSENCE OF METAL This is one of the best albums I have ever heard. I havent heard any of the other iced earth CDs but this destroys anything I have heard before by any artist. Thrash Power and Progression combine seamlessly to create a truly indescribible experience. The guitar work is so fast its mind blowing and the keyboards and percussion work nicely together. This is what metal is supposed to sound like, and you are a metal fan of any kind you would be a fool to not buy this album. Submitted by Steve (PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Night Of The Stormrider CD music
$14.05 By the time they recorded their eponymous debut, heavy metal traditionalists Iced Earth were seasoned veterans, having gradually climbed their way to the surface of a Florida club scene swimming with hundreds of death metal bands. And it shows, for despite a few production kinks, their sound (combining a tremendous Iron Maiden influence with a few thrash metal tricks, namely double kick drums) was almost fully developed. Led by rhythm guitarist Jon Schaffer, the group storm their way through a series of galloping anthems filled with guitar harmonies, complex time changes, ...
| | Iced Earth Burnt Offerings CD (1995)
Night Of The Stormrider music CDs
$13.85 After a four-year absence, which, in retrospect, actually spared them from the abuse suffered by most metal bands during the peak years of alternative rock, Iced Earth returned to action with 1995's Burnt Offerings. Known for their uncompromising defense of epic classic metal, the band gets right back to work with the elaborate title track's surprising mix of soft piano tinklings, chorused vocals, double kick drums, and crushing guitars. Remarkably, it all seems to work, and while his ultra-dramatic vocal style occasionally verges on ...

Night Of The Stormrider songs
$11.95 Carpe Diem can be seen as Will Haven's pinnacle in many ways. After great success with previous albums and riding upon the heels of tours with such bands as Deftones, Carpe Diem is a great question mark on the career of the band. Overall, this ten-song album finds the band picking up where previous works have left off. The vocals are ...

| | Kelly Richey Speechless CD (2006)
Night Of The Stormrider music CDs
$14.09 Occasionally, on the Kelly Richey Band's all-instrumental album Speechless (get it? So have Albert Lee, Bruce Cockburn, and many other artists making vocal-free recordings.), sparks fly and you want to believe. This happens on "The Longest Road," on which blues-rock guitarist Richey's soaring, melodic lead lines escalate, change course, fly off someplace else and rise yet again. And it happens on "Only the Bird Knows," on which Richey takes to her acoustic guitar and deftly balances the instrument's inherent gentleness with serious rhythmic muscle. But mostly it just doesn't happen. For too much of Speechless, Richey and her rhythm section -- bassist Jimmy V and drummer David Clawson -- trod and plod. That is to say they trod on familiar territory (Stevie Ray Vaughan fans will often feel déjà vu) and plod through arrangements that never quite get off the ground. While the decision to make an instrumental album was a noble one indeed, the lack of vocals, rather than serve to draw attention to the musicians' proficiency or the properties of their interactions instead makes most of Speechless feel like backing tracks. Richey is obviously a talented guitar slinger, but she's lost for original ideas here. And the bassist and drummer are powerless to save her; drummer Clawson is particularly wooden throughout. It would not be surprising to learn that these same tunes have the potential to rile up a bar crowd, but the studio setting only points up the been-there-heard-that nature of the music. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
