With their sprawling, progressive balladry mixed with speed metal turns, Nevermore seem to retreat from the consistent power metal stance of Politics of Ecstasy on 1999's Dreaming Neon Black. On this, their third full-length release for the giant indie metal label Century Media, the band slips creatively, rehashing concepts and sonics from their earlier material. The struggles could be due in part to the group's first lineup change in their six-year history as ex-Forbidden guitarist Tim Calvert joins Warrel Dane (vocals), Van Williams (drums), James Sheppard (bass), and guitarist Jeff Loomis. Slogging through familiar-sounding numbers like "Deconstruction," "All Play Dead," and three other slow-paced, vocal-driven ballads, Nevermore seem to be losing steam. The ex-Sanctuary core of Dane, Loomis, and Sheppard don't stray too far from their earlier work, as the cleanly arpeggiated melodrama takes the forefront much like 1996's In Memory. Fast numbers like "Fault of the Flesh" and "Beyond Within" have a modern thrash spark, suggesting Calvert's influence might have actually been a positive but limited one. Nevermore always produce quality work, especially with regards to their musicianship; however, Dreaming Neon Black, with its slow-paced track list and subpar melodies is not the band's best effort. ~ Vincent Jeffries

It has more impact than their previous full length album
"The Politics of Ectasy." Heavy riffs, very melodic yet strong vocals and many, many, quirky chord changes. I assume that the woman in the pictures and lyrics is a lost lover. I guess she's meant to be the fans' own interpretation. Whoever she is, she adds to the moodiness of the album. All in all, this is a great album for Nevermore fans! A quality album This is the first album I have heard, and now I will be getting into the earlier stuff.
This cd has a very broad range, and has plenty of power. Warrel Dane's vocals are a treat and combined with crunching guitars and pounding drums, makes this a must. Submitted by a reviewer (WARNERS BAY, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nevermore's Masterpiece! Overall, the best Nevermore release in
my opinion, a close second would definitely have to be 'The Politics of Ecstasy'. 'Dreaming Neon Black' has a very dark, haunting atmosphere and is very powerful both musically and lyrically. What can I say? This is metal at it's finest. Within my top five metal CD's ever. Also contains one of my favorite Nevermore tracks 'Cenotaph'. Very haunting indeed. Pick this one up. You will not be disappointed. Submitted by Atomandevil1 (Duluth, Mn, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
FLESH IS THE FAULT!!!! i have allways been a huge fan of this megagroup. i recently gave this cd a try, and i was VERY pleased. i don't care what all of you people say, DANE OWNS!!!! one of the best singers ever, i have a tremendous respect for the guy in the fact that he actually blew his voice out, i mean this guy was an opera singer for 5 years!! the guitars are HEAVY!!! loomis is one of my favorite guitarists ever, and this cd just screams AWESOME. very solid drumming by van williams, this guy is one of the most talented drummers out there. buy this cd, and prepared to be FLOORED Submitted by foolious (sandy utard) Was This Review Helpful? Intriguing I'm not the world's biggest Nevermore fan, but a friend of mine ranks right up there, and has inflicted several of their albums on me. I hated this band at first. The music rips, as Van Williams, Jim Shepard and Jeff Loomis are all awesome musicians. It's just that singer guy ... God, I hate Warrel Dane's blubbering vocals. I have NEVER been able to hear the appeal of this guy. Anyway, I knew Dreaming Neon Black is generally regarded as Nevermore's crowning achievement, and so I kept coming back to it every now and again to give it another whirl. Still don't like Dane and probably never will, but here, his vocals have an odd, echoey effect and aren't pushed to the fornt in the mix the way they are on Dead Heart In A Dead World, so they're a bit more tolerable here. They also help to lend that disturbing, psychotic feel that the story (such as it is) demands. Speaking of the story, I only have a general outline of what's supposed to be going on. Something about Dane's girlfriend getting mixed up with a religious cult and with drugs, and they eventually kill her. (shades of Operation MindCrime, anyone?) Anyway, I find myself enjoying this album now, nearly five years after first hearing it. The first three songs (after the intro) totally RIP, as well as others like "Fault of the Flesh," and "Deconstruction," once the latter gets going. The pace is generally slow to mid-, the guitar sound is razor-sharp (some of the sharpest I've ever heard, actually), and the drumming excellent. Not many of the songs are exactly memorable, and there are some cringeworthy moments from Dane (see second verse of the title track). I dunno though, the whole thing just has this strange, disturbing aura about it that intrigues me. Good for late, cold nights, brooding by yourself. $10.25 Seattlites Nevermore carved a unique little niche for themselves, mixing power metal, thrash, and traditional heavy metal stylings into a heady, dark witch's brew that's as muscular as it is melodic. While previous platters Dead Heart, in a Dead World and Dreaming Neon Black were sprawling, epic concept albums, Enemies of Reality has more elements of a nasty little thrash record, clocking in at a relatively brief 40 minutes and letting rip with the pummeling aggression of the leadoff title track (which boasts ...
