After collaborating with Tim Rice on the enormously successful Lion King soundtrack, Elton John once again joined forces with the veteran stage lyricist on a contemporary score for Verdi's AIDA. Based on Egypt's enslavement of Nubia in the time of the Pharoahs, AIDA tells the story of ill-fated love between Prince Radames and a Nubian slave whose name graces this work. John recruited a cavalcade of musical superstars, stopping long enough to duet with Lulu ("The Messenger"), Janet Jackson ("I Know The Truth"), LeAnn Rimes ("Written In The Stars") and Heather Headley and Sherie Scott, members of the stage show ("A Step Too Far.")

Elsewhere, John and Rice wrote material that ranges from Sting's Sly & Robbie-produced reggae romp "Another Pyramid" to the rhythmically explosive teaming of Tina Turner and Angelique Kidjo on "Easy As Life." John's broad musical palette find him using Motown-flavored rhythms on Lenny Kravitz's infectious "Like Father Like Son," fusing hip-hop and gospel on Kelly Price's "The Gods Love Nubia" and giving Headley a chance to show off vocal chops on "Elaborate Lives."

Includes liner notes by Tim Rice.

Don Henley Inside Job CD  (2000)

Aida album
CD $7.29  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The former Eagle's first solo album in more than a decade doesn't sound much like the Eagles. Musically, the album is a melange of folk rock, mild funk, blues, and piano driven New Age balladry reminiscent of Bruce Hornsby. Lyrically, the songs continue in the vein of Henley's last recorded original outing, the 1994 Eagles reunion single "Get Over It." The years seem to have mellowed Henley enough that he sees the irony of a rock star addressing important issues like ecology ("Goodbye to a River") or class warfare. Other notable tracks here include "Taking You Home," a lush romantic ballad, and "Nobody Else in the World But You," featuring some deft keyboards by guest Stevie Wonder. "Damn it, Rose," is a genuinely poignant song, from the perspective of a single father whose wife has committed suicide. The most ambitious track, however, is "They're Not Here, They're Not Coming," which is not only the album's best rocker, but a hilarious dissection of UFO mania as "a sorry substitution for a spiritual life." INSIDE JOB was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Taking You Home" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and "Workin' It" was nominated for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Personnel: Stevie Wonder (keyboards, background vocals); Luther Waters, Darryl Phinnessee, Pat Lennon, Dorian Holley, ...

After several years of quiet in the studio, Santana is joined by his seasoned contemporary Eric Clapton and by such young luminaries as Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, Rob Thomas, and Fher (of famed Mexi-rockers Mana). As an album that caps a rock career spanning more than three decades, SUPERNATURAL is a testament to the stylistic ...

Recorded live at The Royal Festival Hall, London, England on May 18, 1974 and Madison Square Garden, New York, New York on November 28, 1974. Includes liner notes by John Tobler and Paul Gambaccini. Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). Elton John originally released 1975's HERE AND THERE to fulfill contractual obligations to Dick James Music, the label he started out on. Unlike most artists content to put out something sub-par, EJ instead released a pair of recent, exemplary live recordings. The CD reissue includes a number of outstanding additions. The original record split its tracks between two 1974 shows: London's Royal Festival Hall and Madison Garden. John began the London show by revisiting his earlier material, starting solo with "Skyline Pigeon" before being joined by the band for "Border Song." The first batch of bonus material includes "Take Me To The Pilot," "Burn Down The Mission" and a rare duet with Lesley Duncan, the composer of "Love Song." The polite performance of the London material is in direct contrast to the maniacal energy of John's MSG show. Complementing the effervescent readings of Elton hits such as "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" and "Rocket Man" is John Lennon's last live performance. This ...

Aida songs
CD $7.09  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). Recorded live on WABC-FM, 11-17-70 would become the fourth of John's records to simultaneously land in the Top 10, making him the first act to do so since The Beatles. Drawing mostly from his self-titled second album, John's set included a sweeping "Sixty Years On," a gospel-soaked reading of "Take Me To The Pilot" and a funked-up "Honky Tonk Women." Dee Murray and Nigel Olson's background vocals and solid rhythmic support on songs such as "Bad Side Of The Moon" and "Can I Put You On" made this a particularly potent trio that would set the stage for such groups as Ben Folds Five 25 years later. The centerpiece of this show was a roof-raising, ...

Elton John Rock Of The Westies CD  (1975) Remastered

Aida album
CD $6.85  4.3 stars Audio Samples
Digitally remastered by Tony Cousins (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). When Elton John went into the studio to record ROCK OF THE WESTIES, he did it with a revamped line-up. Davey Johnstone and Ray Cooper stayed on while Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson were replaced by Kenny Passarelli and Roger Pope respectively. Also added to the band were old mate Caleb Quaye and synthesizer player James Newton Howard, whose keyboard talents combined with John's and considerably broadened the unit's sound. WESTIES found EJ sounding revitalized after scoring seven consecutive top five hits in the preceding two years (The tropical-flavored "Island Girl" kept the streak alive by ending up at number one). With the Bernie Taupin/Elton John juggernaut creating up-tempo numbers such as "Grow Some Funk Of Your Own" and "Street Kids," the new band played with such magical synergy that even oddly titled numbers "I Feel Like A Bullet (In The Gun Of Robert Ford)" and "Billy Bones And The White Bird" had their own quirky appeal. Although most of this record is fairly obscure, ROCK OF THE WESTIES is a sprightly collection often overshadowed amidst better-known albums like TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION and HONKY CHATEAU. Less than four months after issuing the landmark and autobiographical Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975), Elton John re-emerged with a new band and a slightly modified sound. However, the departure of Dee Murray (bass) and Nigel Olsson ...

Billie Holiday V-Disc Recordings: A Musical Contribution By America's Best For Our Armed Forces Overse CD  (1998)

Aida CD music
CD $8.79  Audio Samples
Billie Holiday's reputation as a jazz singer is such that any newly unearthed recordings are historically valuable. Her performances of nine songs for the 1940s-era V-Disc program presented here could do with more annotation (for example, when did they take place exactly?), or even any at all, and one wishes they ran longer than 30 minutes. Also, some of them sound suspiciously like previously released recordings. But Holiday nevertheless is wonderful on some of her familiar tunes, notably a medley (or is it just an odd edit?) of "Do Nothin' Till You Hear From Me" and "I'll Get By" recorded live before a large, enthusiastic audience. Distributor Collectors' Choice Music notes in its catalog that Holiday is accompanied by the Louis Armstrong Orchestra on "Don't Explain," though this is not claimed ...

Following on from the success of the chart single and album Perilous Journey, Gordon set out on a major tour with a full band to promote Fear Of The Dark. The tour and album reviews were very positive, admiring Gordon's dexterity in mixing folk, classical and rock styles to create a symphonic or progressive genre, creating comparisons with Mike Oldfield. Nothing Is Straight In My House
Saints Nothing Is Straight In My House CD  (2005) (Import) Import; United Kingdom

Aida CD music
CD $20.99
NOTHING IS STRAIGHT IN MY HOUSE, the 13 track release from seminal punk group The Saints, features 13 tracks including "Porno Movies" and "Digging A Hole." Since 1997's Howling, Chris Bailey has been working hard to re-establish the Saints's reputation as a tough, hard-edged rock & roll band after a string of pop-oriented albums in the 1980s, and 2005's Nothing Is Straight in My House takes a further step in the right direction by pairing Bailey with one of the best guitarists in Australian rock, Marty Willson-Piper of the Church. While Nothing Is Straight in My House is a far cry from the punk-flavored assault of (I'm) Stranded, the pounding opening salvo of "Porno Movies" shows Willson-Piper knows how to confidently make with the crunch, while drummer Pete Wilkinson and bassist Caspar Wijnberg set up a menacing throb in the background. While Bailey does throw in a few mid-tempo numbers along the way, such as the folk-rock-influenced "I Couldn't Help Myself" and "Garden Dark," the good news is "Bang On," "Paint the Town Electric," and "Nylon Pirates" find the Saints rocking out with smarts, swagger, and supreme confidence, and Chris Bailey is once again producing the sort of sneering vocals that made him a contender back in the day. Bailey is also writing up to his best standard on this set, and while the overly clean production sometimes holds the band back, the fact is this album rocks, and when it comes to the Saints, that's ...

Noah Baerman Soul Force CD  (2005)

Aida music CDs
CD $18.99
"Soul Force" is Noah Baerman's fourth album under his own name, and the first to feature an ensemble larger than a trio. Trombonist Robin Eubanks and saxophonists Steve Wilson, Jimmy Greene, Wayne Escoffery and Claire Daly make up the horn section. Other guests include Amanda Monaco on guitar, Warren Smith on marimba and Tigger Benford on percussion, as well as percussionist Marcos Torres, III and guitarist Rebecca Koval, two teenaged musicians making their recorded debuts. Anchoring the band and joining Noah for several trio numbers are bassist Henry Lugo and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza, the current member of Noah's trio. On "Soul Force," these accomplished musicians help Noah to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

's life and message. The soulful, eclectic material revolves around Noah's composing and arranging." The title track, which features Wilson and Eubanks, was premiered on Noah's 2005 "Piano Jazz" broadcast with Marian McPartland and doubles as a dedication to the recently departed pianist James Williams. "Montgomery, 1956" is an ambitious and programmatic piece for a 12-piece ensemble, while both "Washington, 1963" and "Memphis, 1968" explore whisper-to-a-scream dynamic contrasts. Noah's rousing Afro-Latin arrangement of Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday" (a theme song from the campaign to commemorate MLK with a national holiday) leans heavily on percussion, as does "Satyagrahi," featuring Tigger Benford's tablas. More familiar tunes include Thelonious Monk's "Justice" (sometimes known as "Evidence"), and the spirituals "This Little Light of Mine" and "(Ain't Gonna Let Nobody) Turn Me 'Round." As with the ideas and events that inspired the music, the expressive range of the music is broad, evoking delicate tenderness, gutbucket soul, unbridled passion and at times unsettling darkness. The cumulative effect is an exhilarating musical ...

All At Once
Paulson All At Once CD  (2005)

Aida album
CD $12.39  Audio Samples
Paulson's first album, Variations, was an occasionally off-putting mix of post-rock noodling and emo neediness, neither "difficult" enough to be a challenging listen nor attractive enough to entice listeners past its more abstruse moments. Dropped from Initial Records after that effort, the band underwent a musical reorganization, signed with a smaller label, and delivered a far superior second effort. All At Once won't sound particularly new or different to anyone even passingly acquainted with the whole post-Pinkerton school of pop emo, but unlike on their debut, Paulson here sounds like a band committed to their music and wanting to make a more direct, focused album than before. Shorter and less meandering than before, the songs are built as much on Mike Smeen's droning synth lines as they are Jesse Burton's newly restrained guitar lines, and singer Logan Laflotte is working in a more relaxed, less angsty register. The results are much more pleasing to the ear, but there's still a heard-it-all-before element to even the best songs here. In much ...
