$22.00 | | Tomita - Snowflakes Are Dancing CD (2000)
Brahms: String Sextets / Anner Bylsma, L'Archibudelli
$9.25 The music of Claude Debussy, with its exotic color and quirky harmonies is well suited to performance on any number of different instruments. Japanese synthesizer wizard Tomita realized that the moog synthesizer, with its almost limitless palette of colors and sounds, would be ideal for Debussy's music. "Snowflakes Are Dancing" is Tomita's electronic vision of Debussy.
The moog synthesizer creates sounds that defy description. The synthesizer also has the ability to recreate the sounds of such traditional instruments as the harpsichord, organ, trumpet and strings. The synthesizer can mimic sound of the human voice. Tomita draws on all of these possibilities in his presentation of Debussy's music. Debussy favorites such as "Clair de lune" and "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" take on a new life in Tomita's treatment. For example, the sound of the ocean, punctuated by the cries of seagulls provides the ideal stage for Tomita's treatment of "The Engulfed Cathedral." Tomita's eccentricity will keep listeners on their toes and the crystal clear sound quality will test their speakers. This is Debussy like you have never heard before; it is the stuff of fantasy and dreams.
High Performance 24/96 remastering of Tomita's American debut of electronic renderings of Debussy classics that turned both the classical and pop worlds on their ears and expanded that realm of electronic music. Sampled at 24bit, 96khz for the best possible sound!

Brahms: String Sextets / Anner Bylsma, L'Archibudelli
$14.15 This blistering and thunderous performance of Brahms' Piano Concerto in D minor may well be the most exciting since the Berlin Philharmonic's recording with Eugen Jochum and Emil Gilels back in the early 1970s. Maurizio Pollini shows in the vigorous and exuberant third movement why he is regarded as one of the most dynamic pianists of our time.
The appeal of this towering work resides in its grandiose and majestic themes. Rich with thick contrapuntal textures and a piano part worthy of Liszt, this work has often been referred to as a symphony with piano. The opening movement is a stunner: a grandiose and stirring string section backed by a thunderous timpani. The movement soon gives way to a somber piano solo before developing into that is only later worked into the canvas of the movement's expansive development. The second movement owes its stately and serene tone to the composer's growing attachment to Robert Schumann's wife--Brahms wrote in a letter to her that the second movement was a "delicate portrait" of her. In the finale Brahms deftly works in a reference to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony before closing the work in a blaze of symphonic glory.
