Mr. "Sheer Profundity" delivered a stunning fourth solo album that probably surprised himself as well as the critics who were prepared to watch his fall from grace after the seeming failure of the intense THE SOUL CAGES. Right from the opener, "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," the album holds its pace. That track will be seen as a classic in years to come, as will the beautiful "Fields Of Gold" and "Shape Of My Heart." Sting is established as a major artist with a solo career that has now eclipsed his former supergroup.
Recorded at Lake House, Wiltshire, England.
Personnel: Sting (vocals, harmonica, saxophone, bass); David Foxxe (spoken vocals); Dominic Miller (guitar); Paul Franklin (pedal steel guitar); Simon Fisher, Kathryn Greeley (violin); James Boyd (viola); Sian Bell (cello); Dave Heath (flute); Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian pipes, fiddle); Larry Adler, Brendan Power (chromatic harmonica); John Barclay, Guy Barker (trumpet); Richard Edwards, Mark Nightingale (trombone); David Sancious (keyboards); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums).
Rolling Stone (3/18/93, p.38) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...strikes the tricky balance of being both uncompromised and relaxed....TALES is loose and swinging; the joy in the playing is palpable....Sting's singing is superb, a virtual study in intelligent rock-vocal technique...masterful..." Spin (4/93, p.94) - Highly Recommended - "...his most playful record....Sting continues to emphasize his flair for haunted, existential romance..." Entertainment Weekly (3/12/93, p.60) - "...11 terse, vividly imagined gems....has plenty of catchy, unburdened moments..." - Rating: A Q (1/94, p.83) - Included in Q's list of `The 50 Best Albums Of 1993.' BRAND NEW DAY continues Sting's sophisticated approach toward pop music as he once again collaborates with ace musicians on material that knows no cultural or stylistic boundaries. Not surprisingly, the tantric guru chooses love as the theme for this eclectic collection of songs.
Sting's cross-cultural forays range from a collaboration with Algerian singing sensation Cheb Mami on the Ofra Haza-meets-William Orbit "Desert Rose" to the bossa nova-influenced "Big Lie Small World." There's a jazz patina throughout--guest trumpeter Chris Botti emulates Miles Davis on the coffee-house hip-bop of "Perfect Love...Gone Wrong" and long-time friend Branford Marsalis adds mournful clarinet to the sumptuous string arrangements of the noirish "Tomorrow ...

Ten Summoner's Tales album
$11.89 "Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. MERCURY FALLING was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Pop Album.
Since striking out on his own with a cadre of jazz musicians on 1985's THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES, Sting's nomadic wanderings in search of new musical challenges have been a hallmark of all his solo work. MERCURY FALLING continues in this vein, skipping between genres and musical locales. The appearence of The Memphis Horns on "You Still Touch Me" allows Sting to tap into the Stax/Volt spirit, complete with Dominic Miller's Steve Cropper-like phrasing and some of the ex-Police-man's most soulful singing to date. French lyrics are the only anomaly on the bossa-nova beat of "La ...

Ten Summoner's Tales CD music
$11.59 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of ...

Ten Summoner's Tales album
$15.19 "New Killer Star" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Based on the success David Bowie had by resurrecting his collaborative relationship with producer Tony Visconti on 2002's stellar HEATHEN, Bowie returned to the well with Visconti for its follow-up, REALITY. The result finds this New York City resident using his adopted hometown and cozy domestic life as impetus for another batch of fine millennial manna.
Featuring the backing of talented musicians such as guitarist Earl Slick, pianist Mike Garson, and drummer Sterling Campbell, the sound that permeates these 11 songs ranges from the SCARY MONSTERS-era shuffle of "Never Get Old" to the stripped-down, late-night lounge aura of "Bring Me the Disco King," a song dappled by Garson's piano runs and dusted off by Bowie after laying around for a decade. Balancing the sorrow of the sparse "The Loneliest Guy" with a sunnier mood, Bowie tips his hat to Jonathan Richman and ...

Better than I thought it would be! "If I ever lose my faith in you" is the stand-out single from this album. Personally, I bought it for the haunting "Shape of My Heart" after catching the credits of some film or other on satellite tv. I forget the movie, but I wrote down the song and album name it made such an impression. Also on this offering are the other great singles "Fields of Gold" and "It's probably me". A typical current Sting offering, so if you're a fan you will love it. If not, give it a listen anyway & you may be surprised by the old fella. 10 Stars for Ten Summoner's Tales Can Sting ever surpace this Masterpiece
of his musical genius. There is not
a bad tune on this C.D. Sting runs
the gauntlet of musical styles, with
his structure of this collection of
songs. Seven Days, has all the humour
in it's lyrics of a Robin Williams
monologue. Field of Gold is so tender
and discriptive.It's probably Me is
one of the most romantic songs I have
ever heard. The Shape Of My Heart is
so inventive with the lyrics,once
again proving what a musical genius
Sting is. I have to say I have listened
to this c.d. about 1000 times and loved
it as much every single time. Submitted by Patricia (Memphis, Tennessee) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Memories of this album... Gosh, it's 2003 now yet I remember getting this cd 10 years ago, and rushing to play it in my grandmother's car, since I had no working cd player at the time. Fields of gold still kills me with emotion. I remember that time so clearly....The sign of an AMAZING album.
