Tabaco & Ron, Vol. 2 album
$19.04 To delve into history is to reach into mystery. Music is a time-honored method for investigating both. The Chieftains' Paddy Moloney has been obsessed with the historical account of the San Patricios, a band of immigrant Irish soldiers who deserted the American Army during the Mexican-American War in 1846 to fight for the other side, against the Manifest Destiny ideology of James Polk's America. Moloney's Chieftains and co-producer ...

| | Bob Marley Uprising CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Tabaco & Ron, Vol. 2 songs
$10.49 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Bob Marley generated a staggering number of great records during his brief time in the world's spotlight. Although he cut his first recordings in the early 1960s, it was not until the 1973 release of CATCH A FIRE that Marley and the Wailers became international stars. Eight years later Marley was dead, a victim of cancer. In between, he recorded eight studio albums and several live albums, all of excellent quality.
UPRISING is Marley's final album, and it's also one of his best. As on all his recordings, Marley's writing displays the gift for melody that helped non-Jamaican audiences gain access to his music even when he was singing about the details of island life and the doctrine of Rastafarianism. The most popular tracks here, "Could You Be Loved" and "Redemption Song," are pop masterpieces, but so too are lesser known tracks "Coming In From The Cold," "Pimper's Paradise," and "Bad Card." And except for "Redemption Song," a stunningly ...
| | Steeleye Span Please To See The King CD (1971)
Tabaco & Ron, Vol. 2 album
$14.29 Steeleye Span were perhaps the closest musical relatives to the celebrated Fairport Convention in the British folk-rock canon. They worked a similar mix of traditional English folk music and late-'60s/early-'70s rock sensibilities, but leaned more toward the former. Every member of the group was a wildly talented musician in his/her own right. Maddy Prior, later half of the ...
| | Carla Bruni Quelqu'Un M'A Dit CD (2003) Reissue
Tabaco & Ron, Vol. 2 CD music
$9.59 Considering that Carla Bruni is an Italian tire-manufacturing heiress and a former Paris supermodel, it's a safe bet that she didn't cut this fine debut album for the money. That sense of nothing to prove imbues these songs with a catlike comfort that goes right from the ears into one's aching muscles and joints, past any language barrier (all songs are in French) or prejudice against supermodel musical talent. Bruni's ...
| | Hawkwind Live At Glastonbury 1990 CD (2005) (Import)
Tabaco & Ron, Vol. 2 music CDs
$23.85 Recorded just months after the mighty Live in Nottingham 1990 package, Glastonbury 90 -- hailing, of course, from the festival of the same name, that June -- is very much overshadowed by that set. No fewer than five of its ten tracks are duplicated across the Nottingham discs, in very similar form. However, highlights from the newly released Space Bandits album serve to demonstrate what an adventurous album that was, while tight renditions of "Ejection" and "The Assassins of Allah" are definite joys. A truncated "Brainstorm," too, will intrigue listeners accustomed to the song, which drags out to three times its length here. But the (perhaps inevitable) less-than-pristine sound quality does scar the album, while the vocal presence of Bridgette Wishart remains a contentious addition to the band's traditional attack. Nevertheless, anybody looking for a quick introduction to this particular phase of Hawkwind's development will find this as worthy as any other period offering. ~ Dave Thompson

$10.59 If Jim O'Rourke's career rapidly eclipsed Dan Burke's, the later years have reversed the relative importance of the two. While O'Rourke has become a mundane composer of faux avantgarde, Burke has refined his scary, harsh, subliminal form of musique concrete. Burke is the missing link between Italian futurists of a century before and Andy Warhol's art of the collage. His sonic graffitis and murals dissect ordinary life and reconstructs it as an altered state of the mind.Illusion Of SafetyFifteen & In 70 CountriesThe most recent releases from this assemblage. Industry is a true gem of industry-meets-Andromeda sonic union. The long "Temple Set" could well be the most beautiful "cosmic" -industrial piece I've ever heard, being a riverbed, shifting melodic drone overlaid with repetitive metal claging soudns, with lots of deep, low rumblings and even a sampled chorus. The live tracks are primarily in the same harmonious vein, making the whole tape a positively joyous and ominous listening experience. To me, it's theirbest release yet. In 70 Countries, with human torture as its theme, is more sonically diverse and hellish in atmosphere. Included are treated recitations of torture methods, industrial groans and wails, crying babies, high ...
