Bach: Partitas Nos. 2, 4, 5
$8.99 OOPS!... I DID IT AGAIN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Oops!...I Did It Again" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
This second album by the former Mouseketeer turned nymphet heartthrob breaks little new ground compared to BABY ONE MORE TIME. The formula here remains, deliberately, the same: a candy-colored mix of Eurodance, hip-hop, and old-fashioned pop ballads. As before, the lyrics split the difference between "Baby, I love you so bad," as in "Can't Make You Love Me," and "Sorry, I think of you just as a friend," in the title song.
There are also some genuinely amusing moments, as in the conversational finale of "Oops!" in which Britney, after being informed that her boyfriend has recovered the jewel the old lady dropped into the ocean at the end of the TITANIC movie, replies "Oh, you shouldn't have." Most of the stuff here is, of course, transparently disposable pop, but to give Spears her due, she's a far, far better singer than any of the mall-rat pop stars of the late '80s.
Engineers include: John Amatiello, Harvey Mason, Jr., Rodney Jerkins.

Bach: Partitas Nos. 2, 4, 5
$8.69 With his socially conscious messages and positive, pro-active stance, Curtis Mayfield seemed an unlikely candidate to score a blaxploitation film. That SUPERFLY resulted not only in an excellent soundtrack for the film, but in one of Mayfield's best albums, is all the more surprising. In fact, Mayfield's forward-thinking philosophy added a layer of depth to the movie, painting its realistic urban scenes through song in ways that comment on socio-economic hardships and the plight of many African Americans. He is especially skilled at character sketches, as on the driving "Freddie's Dead," and writing from particular points of view, as on the sly, slinky "Pusherman."
Along with Isaac Hayes's SHAFT, SUPERFLY wrote the book on blaxploitation music, pioneering sounds, themes, and moods that would be indelibly associated--thanks in part to the films they accompanied--with black inner-city life in the '70s. Mayfield achieves this with an array of lean funk grooves punctuated by brass arrangements, interlocking percussion, wah-wah guitar, and his wispy, soulful tenor. The title track, which closes out the set, is one of Mayfield's signature tunes, and still stands among the most recognizable, and pleasurable, musical emblems of the era.
Additional Tracks
Recorded at RCA Studios, Chicago, Illinois and Bell Sound Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
SUPERFLY: DELUXE 25TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION contains 2 bonus tracks and the second disc contains rare and previously unreleased tracks as well as an interview with Curtis Mayfield.
Personnel includes: Curtis Mayfield (vocals, guitar); Johnny Pate (arranger, conductor).
| | Roy Hargrove Parker's Mood CD (1995)
Bach: Partitas Nos. 2, 4, 5
$10.89 In the spirit of continuity and tradition, producers Richard Seidel and Don Sickler gathered the pick of the litter for a convocation over the still-warm remains of Charlie Parker, the most vital, visionary figure in 20th Century music. What makes PARKER'S MOOD so special, and so refreshingly different from your typical Bird blowing session, is the sense of intimacy and interchange, as trumpeter, bassist and pianist take on these complex rhythms and melodies, gathered in a circle, live to two-track, without the aid of a drummer.
As a result, PARKER'S MOOD is full of surprises. Not the least of which is the recorded sound, which is resoundingly deep and full of detail, with a real sense of air and space. Much of the credit must go to McBride, whose enormous beat ("Marmaduke"), witty arco work ("Steeplechase") and thundering blues drive ("Red Cross"), and authentic downhome funk ("Star Eyes") are as close to an ideal acoustic bass sound as this generation of players has yet produced.
The taciturn, reticent qualities which distinguish Stephen Scott's piano playing, make him and ideal partner in these proceedings. On "Laura" his serene, bell-like chords frame Hargrove's taut delivery of the melody in dreamy shades of turquoise and green, and his solo makes thoughtful use of space and dynamic contrasts to bring home the point--sweet and romantic without blubbering all over the chords. And check out his solo on "Bongo Bop"--the brother can swing. And Hargrove, always known for his chops, seems to find a new gravity in Bird's intricate melodies, from the muted joy of "Dexterity" through the dancing whimsy of "Chasin' The Bird."
Recorded at Effanel Music Studio, New York, New York from April 12-14, 1995. Includes liner notes by Bret Primack and Jim Anderson.
