If this Nonesuch compilation by the 12-piece gypsy group Taraf de Haidouks is a fair representation of Romanian music, then Western listeners have been missing out on something spectacular. This is stirring, passionate folk music of almost incendiary power, steeped deeply in dance rhythms, complex, looping melodies, and the interaction of traditional gypsy instruments such as accordion, flute, violin, string bass, and cymbalum (a hammered dulcimer producing a kind of hurdy-gurdy sound).
That the ensemble spans three generations--some players are in their twenties, some in their eighties--may have something to do with the dense and varied textures of its music. There's a fierce, pell-mell recklessness that careens through these pieces, yet the instrumentalists execute their frenetic polyrhythms and slashing lead lines with the virtuosity of jazz musicians. Be forewarned: Cuts like the insanely rhythmic "Hora Ca La Ursari," an acapella circle song with only hand claps and a single drum as accompaniment, and the intense, almost cartoonish pace of "Rustem" and "Briu" may make you want to jump up, tear things apart and kiss strangers. A sure-fire purchase for anyone even remotely interested in world, folk, or ethnic dance music.

WILLOW HALE has been playing guitar and singing folksongs since she was 13 years old in Gulfport, Mississippi. She entered a talent contest at that time and won first place, singing BANKS OF THE OHIO. She wrote her first song REDBIRD when she was 19 and from then on played her own songs as well as old folk, blues, jazz and some country in the Bay Area near San Francisco, including THE BOARDING HOUSE and FREIGHT AND SALVAGE in Berkeley. Karmedy: the combined forces of karma and comedy, the good and the bad, the balance that is life. This concept is found in the writings of the band. 'Everything that happens to us in life makes us who we are, for better or worse," states guitarist and songwriter Josh Holland, "I feel that if you come out stronger and more in tune with your life, it was worth the lesson." The two founding members, Sean McIrvin and Josh Holland, spent the better part of a year writing and recording their first album. It started when the long time friends got together while working on individual projects. After realizing that insight and inspiration could be taken from one another, they decided to pursue a joint project. The project has become Karmedy.Something non traditional about the album, especially in this genre of music, is the fact that all of the instruments were recorded by one person. Josh Holland performed all of the guitar, bass, and drums tracks on the album. When it came to vocal approach, the two had distinctly different styles that complimented the other. Sean can be handed a microphone, told "Go!" and create lyrics on the fly that rival many groups years of hard work. Josh, on the other hand, will listen repeatedly and get bits of the lyrics at a time. So in the studio, some of the songs were prewritten by Josh then modified by Sean.
