One of John Cale's very finest solo efforts, Paris 1919 is also among his most accessible records, one which grows in depth and resonance with each successive listen. A consciously literary work -- the songs even bear titles like "Child's Christmas in Wales," "Macbeth," and "Graham Greene" -- Paris 1919 is close in spirit to a collection of short stories; the songs are richly poetic, enigmatic period pieces strongly evocative of their time and place. Chris Thomas' production is appropriately lush and sweeping, with many tracks set to orchestral accompaniment; indeed, there's little here to suggest either Cale's noisy, abrasive past or the chaos about to resurface in his subsequent work -- for better or worse, his music never achieved a similar beauty again. ~ Jason Ankeny PARIS 1919 is considered by many critics (and Cale fans) to be his best. Released in 1973, 1919 was recorded in Los Angeles with members of Little Feat, Wilton Felder and the UCLA Orchestra, and stands as one of the best "rock/classical" fusions, mainly because Cale (who is a classically-trained musician) avoids the heavy-handed pomp and pretensions that besiege so much "art-rock." He also manages to maintain the qualities of tunefulness and whimsy. His lyrics are absurdist/Dadaist-style poetry and word play, sung in a plaintive, unaffected, almost choirboy style. The songs have a longing, haunted feel to them-"Half Past France" is a perfect distillation of the musings that often accompany late-night travel. Throughout, the usual rock instrumentation is colored and caressed by exquisite pedal steel guitar, French horn, harmonium and strings. Cale remembers to rock out, too: "Macbeth" is a dense, driving, Move-styled take on the Shakespeare play, complete with raving, keening slide guitar and thundering drums. PARIS 1919 stands as one of the "lost" classic rock albums of the 1970s.

Q (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A]rtful and smooth California rock, which particularly in its ballads...exudes a woozy warmth." Q (1/94, p.108) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...its melancholic melodies and enigmatic, wintry lyrics make this undoubtedly his best work...." Uncut (11/03, p.106) - "The easiest point of entry into Cale's world, and the first great album of Cale's post-Velvets career..." The Wire (6/00, pp.36-7) - "...Excellent chamber pop....Cale's 1st masterpiece, it is one of the very few records anywhere to integrate orchestra and rock instruments so fully that you can't see the join..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he piano-and-vocal mix of the title track is sure to please anyone seduced by the stripped-down Cale of 1992's live FRAGMENTS IF A RAINY SEASON." Ever since ZZ Top signed with RCA, they fitfully tried to break free of the synthesized blues that once was their savior but quickly became a straitjacket. Like any addict, it was hard for them to quit that processed, sequenced sound cold turkey, so they weaned themselves off the robo-boogie, sometimes relapsing and adding too many synths to mix, other times breaking loose with some credible boogie. Apart from the misstep of 1999's XXX, they showed signs of life on all their RCA albums, and their fourth, 2003's long-delayed Mescalero, is no exception to the rule. Billy Gibbons' fat guitar tone really has some presence here, at least on some of the album, and there are enough rhythm tracks not performed to a didactic click track to provide some real swing. There are even moments that suggest Gibbons' songwriting chops might be returning, such as the closing "Liquor," the rampaging instrumental "Crunchy," and the lithe "What Would You Do." On these cuts, along with a cover of Lowell Fulson's "Tramp," ZZ Top sound like a worthy veteran act, returning to their strengths and building on them, although the rest of the record is pretty much devoted to by-the-books latter-day ZZ Top. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Ever since ZZ Top signed with RCA, they fitfully tried to break free of the synthesized blues that once was their savior but quickly became a straitjacket. $17.09 Jo Morrison is nationally known for her evocative interpretation of Scottish and Irish music on the harp. Chuck Lipsig from Green Man Review's Best of 2000 listings states "Jo gets more out of the harp than should be possible."Having spent several months in 2005 teaching, writing music, and performing on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland, Jo's knowledge and understanding of the Celtic genre puts her in great demand as performer, adjudicator, and teacher across the country. “Morrison is at ease with this authentic Celtic music, and lends to it a sense of honest exuberance I find refreshing.” -- The Harp Column. She frequently performs with the Celtic duo, Port Righ, featuring harp and shuttle pipe, the Highland Pipe's quieter cousin. The duo has performed concerts at locations such as the Library of Congress, Somerset Harp Festival, the Smithsonian, various Scottish Festivals around the United States and also in Scotland, Ireland, and Germany. Their commitment to a traditional style gives them a sound comfortable both in today's modern society and also fitting for Renaissance festivals, historic sites, and other re-creationist events. Port Righ released their first recording in 2007: "Na Bi Górach – Don't be Foolish."When not performing, Jo spends her time teaching harp privately and in classes and workshops, and composing and arranging Celtic music for the Celtic harp. She is Vice-President for Washington Area Folk Harp Society and has previously served as Benefit Coordinator for the WAFHS and the Competition Chair and Board Member for the Scottish Harp Society of America. She also teaches harp at Common Ground on the Hill in Westminster, Maryland, and has taught at the Ohio Scottish Arts School, the Somerset Harp Festival, and at the Midsummer Harp Course on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. She has served as harp judge at numerous Celtic harp competitions, including the U.S. National Scottish Harp Championship.Jo’s musical gifts shine in her solo recordings. On her debut album, The Three Musics (1998), she gathers several guest instrumentalists to celebrate the different musics performed by Celtic harpers of old: the musics of mirth, sorrow, and sleep. Jo intermingles arrangements of traditional tunes with her own original compositions “to create an atmosphere that brings to mind both modern coffee shops and halls of ancient kings” (Ellen Rawson, Femmusic). Jo followed this success with the critically acclaimed ...
