In 1994, the Japanese noise-rock collective Boredoms gained its widest exposure in the US as the opening act for that year's first leg of the Lollapalooza touring festival. Drawing acclaim for its kinetic live performances, the almost innately spastic group followed up with CHOCOLATE SYNTHESIZER, its second full-length major-label outing.
While the disc was widely considered to be the most accessible Boredoms album up to that point, that notion is qualified by the fact that the word "accessible" doesn't seem to exist in the ensemble's vocabulary.
Despite the presence of a few more melodies, this is still art-damaged, chaos-obsessed, genre-hopping music that delves into everything from speed metal to Krautrock to collages of pure cacophony. As always, frontman Yamatsuka Eye's arsenal of screams, yelps, and vocal histrionics is the group's main weapon, as revealed on SYNTHESIZER's metal-tinged opener, "Acid Police." Other highlights include the visceral "Action Synthesizer Hero," the insanely giddy "B for Boredoms," and the herky-jerky "I'm Not Synthesizer (YPY?)." Though any Boredoms release is bound to be bizarrely fascinating, CHOCOLATE SYNTHESIZER stands out as one of the mercurial band's best offerings.

Rolling Stone (7/13-7/27/95, p.111) - "...Without question, the Boredoms are one of the most bizarre, adventurous bands on the planet, but for anyone who doesn't thrill to disjointed beats and cacophonous clatter, CHOCOLATE SYNTHESIZER may be a tough sweet to swallow." Spin (3/95, pp.95-96) - 6 (out of 10) - "...Their dissonant vocal repertoire...combined with herky-jerky stop-start thrash and spontaneous feedback explosions, hardly beckons for repeated plays. CHOCOLATE SYNTHESIZER is...less abrasive than last year's POP TATARI...leaning more toward conventional song structures..." Chocolate Synthesizer album
$9.09 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts ...
| | Suicide First Album CDs (1977)
Chocolate Synthesizer CD music
$12.59 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, ...

| | Boredoms Super Are CD (1998)
Chocolate Synthesizer songs
$10.79 Surfacing again with an American release after a couple years of absence, the Boredoms showed themselves to still be truly a unique proposition with Super Ae. Taking some more of the prog/Kraut influences that crept into earlier efforts while still firing up the amps all around, Eye and his cohorts (forming a core quintet this time around) once again become the most out-there band in the world. "Super You" is a simply fantastic way to start, with initial whizzing stereo-to-stereo sounds leading into a wonderful collection ...

| | Bobby Goldsboro Honey/Gotta Start Lovin' CD (2006)
Chocolate Synthesizer CD music
$12.29 This pairing of two of Bobby Goldsboro's albums for United Artists makes for a slightly curious match -- Goldsboro had been making albums for five years when he scored his biggest hit in 1969 with the title cut from Honey, while 1971's We Gotta Start Lovin' was one of his last efforts for UA before his well of hits dried up in the early '70s. The two albums have a noticeably different tone and attitude as well; Honey is dominated by pop songs about love, often (though not always) with a melancholy undertow, while We Gotta Start Lovin' is a light but sincere ...
| | Chris Taylor Girl Of My Dreams CD (2007)
Chocolate Synthesizer music CDs
$18.99 Chris Taylor/pianoBarry Smith/bassBob Savine/drums with Marc Adler/flutes------------------------------------------------------------More comments:"Taylor is a strong soloist and composer, and...has a style...with lyrical, well-considered lines. (Adler) and Taylor phrase beautifully together on the unison heads...and they deliver the magic that flute and piano together are capable of. The originals are of high quality. All in all, this is a fine recording and a set well deserving of my recommendation." -David Kane (pianist, composer, reviewer for Cadence Magazine)"I know both Chris Taylor and Marc Adler. They're top notch musicians...This is a beautiful CD with really great writing and playing. Really a pleasure to listen to. I dig this cd!"-Tony Miceli (vibraphonist/webmaster of larrys improv page.com) "Congratulations on completing another great project. Marc really is an exceptional flautist. I'd like to transcribe some of his solos!...keep the great music coming."-Bruce Abbott (saxophonist/flutist/vocalist/North Star Jazz Ensemble)"…we received your new CD. It's wonderful. I've been playing it daily. I had never heard of Marc Adler before. He's terrific."-anonymous------------------------------------------------------------ We can all agree that successful relationships require a good amount of improvisational skills. Here are four jazz musicians, doing what they do best...improvising...while playing to the women in their lives. The cd includes two cover tunes and six originals, played passionately, with a sprinkle of wit and a dash of humor. Marc Adler teams up with my trio on this, the second release from SweetPea Recordings, to record six original compositions along with the title track, “Girl of My Dreams”, a Sonny Clapp creation, recorded by many, including Charles Mingus, and John Coltrane’s beautiful ballad, “Naima”. Marc, an exceptional flutist from Philadelphia, is backed up here by myself, along with the other members of my Boston based trio, two very creative and supportive musicians, Barry Smith on acoustic bass and Bob Savine on drums. This is a project born from an association Marc and I had ...
| | Glenn Miller Broadcast Instrumentals CD (2007) (Import)
Chocolate Synthesizer songs
$13.15 With all due respect to his star vocalists Marion Hutton, Ray Eberle, and Tex Beneke, this album of 22 "Broadcast Instrumentals" weighs in with the best of the all-purpose Glenn Miller compilations. Harvested from radio airchecks recorded between March 19, 1940, and September 22, 1942, these "unsung" performances by one of America's most popular big bands accurately reflect Miller's selection and maintenance of a well-balanced repertoire, including classic jazz warhorses like "Tiger Rag," W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues," and King Oliver's "Dippermouth Blues," as well as danceable contemporary swing tunes such as Tiny Bradshaw's "Jersey Bounce" and Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump." True to form, Miller also included staid traditional fare like Stephen Foster's "I Dream of Jeanie with the Light Brown ...
