Recorded in Chicago, Illinois between June 24, 1957 and May 1961. Originally released on Chess in 1962. Includes original liner notes by Paul Ackerman.
Simply put, this disc is indispensable for anyone interested in blues, rock, or good music in general. One of the rare, genuine "deals" on record store shelves, this two-fer compiles Howlin' Wolf's first two full-length albums on one CD and offers twenty-two tracks of the man's absolute finest. These are the essential documents of the man who was the last word in electric Chicago blues--a unique and riveting performer whose voice could loose buildings from their foundations and remove skin from bone.
Wolf's visceral impact is overwhelming at times, and his performances on these tunes are definitive. All his best-known and loved are here, including "Shake For Me," "The Red Rooster," "Wang Dang Doodle" Spoonful," "Evil" and "Forty Four." As good, if not better, than any "best of" collection, MOANIN' IN THE MOONLIGHT/HOWLIN' WOLF is a must.
2 LPs on 1 CD.
Includes liner notes by Don Kamerer.

Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All 9 Reviews Absolutely Essential for Real Blues Fans This is probably the best of all the Howlin' Wolf material out there.Contains the best of his work in one inexpensive collection. Once you get a dose of the Wolf you will never be the same.Forget about all those tame rockers. This is as raw and as real as it gets.Guaranteed to blister the paint off the walls. the quintessential.... Forget everything you've heard before, forget everything others have told you about music, forget every other genre of music and start HERE...this is the beginning of modern music, the source from which all else flows. Even Robert Johnson had less influence on every music lovers' psyche from the 50's onward. Smokestack Lightnin', even after more than half a century, remains the most potent symbol of the raw emotion that suffuses great music. It's astonishing how it still causes the hair on the back of my neck to rise and my pulse to quicken the moment I hear it, and that I never tire of hearing it even after forty years. Here, in two classic albums, are the roots of music. Buy them, and modern music from then on will be understandable. Submitted by bob (plymouth, devon, england) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The best of the Wolf This CD contains all the songs from Howlin' Wolf's first two Chess albums. They were both great, indispensable LPs, featuring some of his very best songs. They were compilations of his 1950's singles, so this CD plays like a greatest hits album but at about half the price. No one can knock the Chess "Best Of" that was released in 1998, but compare the song titles: this one has almost identical content and it's CHEAPER. Great stuff, and not to be missed. The Wolf Quintessential Wolf. No surprises; this is the blues the way it was conceived. He's got range, soul, and a voice that sets the foundation for everything that follows in this genre. Get this disc and enjoy. Submitted by quirks1 (Montgomery, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
