(1 Customer Review)
THE COMPLETE PLANTATION RECORDINGS contains previously unreleased material, including 13 original songs, 5 alternate versions, and 4 interviews with Muddy Waters. This compilation also includes an interview with original co-producer Alan Lomax, and several rare, very early photos from The McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters) Estate who licenced this collection.
Recorded on Stovall's Plantation in Clarksdale, Mississippi between 1941 and 1942. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).
The COMPLETE PLANTATION RECORDINGS offers a fascinating glimpse at one of the great figures in blues history-long before he could possibly have imagined his future fame. Folklorist Alan Lomax made these field recordings of Waters in 1941, when the budding artist was still a sharecropper in Mississippi. Unlike the later electrified recordings Waters made in Chicago, these sides primarily feature Waters soloing on acoustic guitar (although mandolin and fiddle accompany him, in the hokum style of Cannon's Jug Stompers, on five tracks).
This disc would be invaluable if only for its historic significance, but the recordings here stand on their own as classics of the country blues style. Interspersed among the 18 songs are four equally fascinating interview segments, during which Waters repeatedly reveals his artistic debt to Delta blues legend Son House. Selections include early versions of "I Can't Be Satisfied" (here called "I Be's Troubled") and "Walkin' Blues" (here entitled "Country Blues"), as well as several religious numbers that demonstrate the influence of Blind Willie Johnson on Waters' early music.
Personnel includes: Muddy Waters (guitar, vocals); Percy Thomas (guitar); Henry "Son" Simms (violin); Louis Ford (mandolin).
Reissue producer: Andy McKaie.

| | Sky Is Crying: The History Of Elmore James CD (1993)
Complete Plantation Recordings CD music
$7.29 This set includes a 14-page booklet with a discography, black and white photogrpaphs, background information about the sessions by Steve Franz and a biographical essay by Robert Palmer.
Rhino's superlative Elmore James retrospective is essential, not only because it brings together 21 of the artist's finest sides, but because it collects those tracks from various periods (1951-1969) and labels (Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Fire, Chief, and Flashback). James's erratic recording history makes a representative one-stop compilation difficult, but from "Dust My Broom," James's signature tune and the set's opener, to "Standing at the Crossroads, " the raw 1960 single that brings the disc to a close, THE SKY IS CRYING serves as both a ...
| | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
Complete Plantation Recordings music CDs
$9.85 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy appears on lead guitar). The band is energetic and plays with equal parts precision and abandon, creating the perfect canvas for Wells's sly, sexy frontman antics. Unlike a lot of his ...

During the '40s and '50s, Chicago's Chess Records recorded a legion of blues legends. But none were greater than McKinley Morganfield, professionally known as Muddy Waters. Though born and raised on the Mississippi delta, Waters came to personify the brash, confident blues that blossomed in Chicago and Memphis in the post-war era. Between 1947 ...
