| | Muddy Waters His Best 1947-55 CD Muddy Waters Discography of CDs
Imagine what the world might have been like without Muddy Waters. It's not a pretty thought. His contributions to the electric blues-and, by extension, to the advent of rock & roll-are inestimable, and his beautifully soulful vocals and slashing ... Full Descriptionslide guitar work are the stuff of which legend is made. This collection, which gathers together Waters' early, seminal work for Chess Records between 1947 and 1955, is almost to good to be true.
Improving on the wildly popular BEST OF MUDDY WATERS with eight more tracks (20 to BEST OF's 12) and superior, remastered sound, this set is simply IT. "His best" is no exaggeration; all the critical tracks are here: "Long Distance Call," "Baby Please Don't Go," "I'm Your Hootchie Cootchie Man," "I Just Want To Make Love To You"...the list goes on. Such incendiary, top-drawer bluesmen as harp player Little Walter, bassist Willie Dixon, and guitarist Jimmy Rogers add fuel to the fire. With the exception of the multi-disc Chess box set, one would be hard pressed to find a better collection by the legendary Waters under one seal. Essential.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
This is part of Chess' 50th Anniversary Collection series.Down Beat (8/97, p.60) - 4 stars (out of 5) - "...the audience for this collection...is most suitable for novices looking to launch an investigation of great Chicago Blues....the power of Waters'...singing and...bottleneck guitar...is present in all its magnificence." His Best 1947-55 album
$15.05 Opening track "The Girl From Ipanema," a breezy, infectious Jobim composition with vocals by both Joao and Astrud, became one of the biggest (and most recognizable) hits of the era, and the single most popular Brazilian tune in America. The exquisite shuffle "Desafinado," the Joao-Astrud duet "Corcovado," and the eminently grooving "So Danco Samba" have gone on to become standards of both bossa nova and jazz, and the versions here are definitive. Getz's sensitive playing blends seamlessly with the deceptively casual rhythmic sophistication of Jobim, Gilberto, and percussionist Milton Banana. The material, the musicianship, ...
| | Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD (1998)
His Best 1947-55 CD music
$12.35 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked her to sing ballads, and ballads are Horn's specialty. She can slow down time in a unique and spellbinding way. Her sultry ...
| | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
His Best 1947-55 music CDs
$9.89 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy appears on lead guitar). The band is energetic and plays with equal parts precision and abandon, creating the perfect canvas for Wells's sly, sexy ...
| | Howlin Wolf His Best CD (1997)
His Best 1947-55 songs
$12.79 Recorded between 1951 & 1964. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey.
Since even Howlin' Wolf's worst recordings are compelling in some regard, it should go without saying that HIS BEST, a collection of his finest Chess sides, is magnificent from beginning to end. Possessed of fine guitar and harp skills, a voice that could separate skin from bone, and a sheer magnetism and charisma that knew (and has known) no equal, Howlin Wolf is one of 20th century music's greatest performers.
Every track here is stellar, and a few like "Evil," "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Back Door Man" and "Spoonful," ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
His Best 1947-55 album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and ...
