| | Howlin Wolf His Best CD Howlin Wolf Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Recorded between 1951 & 1964. Includes liner notes by Mark Humphrey.
Since even Howlin' Wolf's worst recordings are compelling in some regard, it should go without saying that HIS BEST, a collection of his finest Chess sides, is magnificent from beginning to end. Possessed of fine guitar and harp skills, a voice that could separate skin from bone, and a sheer magnetism and charisma that knew (and has known) no equal, Howlin Wolf is one of 20th century music's greatest performers.
Every track here is stellar, and a few like "Evil," "Smokestack Lightnin'," "Back Door Man" and "Spoonful," will have listeners wearing out the repeat button on their disc players. Wolf's ferocious delivery can inspire terror and delight ("Three Hundred Pounds of Joy") equally, and the power of his voice can make you want to shout, laugh, cry or destroy some property. Though true fans may want to investigate the individual albums, HIS BEST is a consistently untouchable collection.
This is part of Chess Records' 50th Anniversary series.

$7.29 This set includes a 14-page booklet with a discography, black and white photogrpaphs, background information about the sessions by Steve Franz and a biographical essay by Robert Palmer.
Rhino's superlative Elmore James retrospective is essential, not only because it brings together 21 of the artist's finest sides, but because it collects those tracks from various periods (1951-1969) and labels (Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Fire, Chief, and Flashback). James's erratic recording history makes a representative one-stop compilation difficult, but from "Dust My Broom," James's signature tune and the set's opener, to "Standing at ...
| | Junior Wells Hoodoo Man Blues CD (1965)
His Best CD music
$9.85 HOODOO MAN BLUES is one of the great albums from the era of classic Chicago blues. Though usually overshadowed by mid-century Chicago legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells ranks among the most dynamic and satisfying performers of the milieu, and his explosive harmonica playing and charismatic vocals come through like gangbusters on this 1965 release. The record has the added distinction of being one of the first long-playing blues albums to hit the scene (blues had largely been confined to 45s prior to its release).
The sessions benefit from notably clean production and fine musicianship (Buddy Guy ...

This deserves to achieve big things for the band." Blues Matters! magazine, UK"I received the album on Saturday morning and have to say it is first class. Every track is great - one of the best opening numbers to an album I've heard in ages."A satisfied fan"A must have CD"Back To The Roots, Belgium"...This is a band with the individual skills and collective creativity to take the music to a new higher level. There isn't a better backline in Britain and you'll not hear better guitar interplay than that achieved by Martin and Vince, a great platform for the latter to show his world-class palying and singing. I think of The Wildcards as a fusion of the best of American and British styles: a robust blend of West-Coast rhythms, Mississippi deep blues, cool jazz and that heady Gene Vincent rockabilly thing. It's not only artistically satisfying, it's pretty darned exciting to listen to!"Blues In Britain magazine, UK- BIOGRAPHY -The Wildcards are quickly becoming the hottest act on the European blues and roots circuit. Whilst their success seems fast on a scene that can take acts years to establish themselves, these four British musicians are certainly no newcomers. Between them over the past 15 years they have released successful and critically acclaimed albums and have made innumerable appearances in over 20 countries, on both sides of the Atlantic and at just about every major European blues festival. The Wildcards have brought together a wealth of experience and a reputation for exciting, high-class performances into one blisteringly hot band, and they're causing a sensation wherever they go!In 2002, soon after the untimely demise of one of finest R&B bands on the circuit - The Nightporters, two former members - guitarist Martin Vowles and drummer Kevin Crowe, set about putting together a band that would capture the excitement and intensity of the legendary Nightporters performances and elevate the music to a new higher level.Finding that line-up was far easier than first expected. A chance meeting in a late night venue in the South West of England, saw Kevin and Martin blown away watching two guys in the band Vince Lee & The Big Combo; the criminally un-famous ...
