A two-disc anthology of their best work, La Historia confirms Caifanes' status as one of the most influential rock bands to emerge from Mexico. The song selections range all the way back from their 1987 debut to a pair of tracks recorded during an MTV Unplugged appearance in 1994. Ranging from the Cure-like post-punk of "Cuentame Tu Vida" to traditional Mexican folk songs, Caifanes demonstrate a wide-ranging variety. "La Negra Tomasa" meshes reggae and Afro-Cuban beats with new wave guitars, while "Quisiera Ser Alcohol" resembles a jazzy torch song. Even as the band explores different musical styles, they never stray from their gifted musicianship and knack for lovely melodies. Newcomers will be impressed by the band's range and musicianship, and longtime fans who will be just as pleased with the well-chosen song selection. For both groups, La Historia will be a superb selection. ~ Victor W. Caifanes Jaguares... Its the same people Saul Hernandez is the best composer of music in the History of LATIN rock. His words are very well put and the music is just excelent. If its rock you want in Spanish look no further than Jaguares or Caifanes, Mana, Enanitos Verdes, and SOME of La Ley. Submitted by az_dbacks85607 (Douglas, AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Originally released on Columbia (34164). Includes liner notes by Lenny Kaye. If ever there were a manifesto for 1970s rock, one that prefigured both the decadence of the decade's burgeoning heavy metal and prog rock excesses and the rage of punk rock, "This Ain't the Summer of Love," the opening track from Agents of Fortune, Blue Öyster Cult's fourth album, was it. The irony was that while the cut itself came down firmly on the hard rock side of the fence, most of the rest of the album didn't. Agents of Fortune was co-produced by longtime Cult record boss Sandy Pearlman, Murray Krugman, and newcomer David Lucas, and in addition, the band's lyric writing was being done internally with help from poet-cum-rocker Patti Smith (who also sings on "The Revenge of Vera Gemini"). Pearlman, a major contributor to the band's songwriting output, received a solitary credit while critic Richard Meltzer, whose words were prevalent on the Cult's previous outings, was absent. The album yielded the band's biggest single with "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," a multi-textured, deeply melodic soft rock song with psychedelic overtones, written by guitarist Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser. | | Honey Tongue Take Me Anywhere CD (2002)
La Historia
$17.09 Honey Tongue has created a nationwide buzz with a full-time touring schedule and the release of its latest CD, "Take Me Anywhere," on Naga Night Records. "I've pined for years for the days when I'd find a band led by a woman, with literate lyrics, hard-charging punk guitars, and riffs to bring me back to Blondie or the Pretenders of a quarter century ago. Honey Tongue has made it worth the wait..." - Erik Steiner, Cosmik Debris"Seattle's Goodness set a high standard for straight-up rock & roll bands fronted by explosively smart 'n' sassy women--now the same burg has produced Honey Tongue, full of their own special goodness. With her starlet looks and paint-peeling pipes, singer Jen Ayers puts "women in rock" like Shakira and Avril to shame on HT's dead-solid debut, Take Me Anywhere." - Salt Lake City's "City Weekly" Honey Tongue engages & captivates audiences with its intelligent lyrics, soaring melodies, high-energy grooves and vibrant image. From fans bum-rushing the stage in major markets across the U.S. Honey Tongue's chemistry is undeniable. Powerhouse vocalist and keyboardist Jen Ayers, guitarist Graham McNeill, bassist Sam Larson and drummer Darnton Lewis, have joined together to create dynamic music with a pop sensibility that translates into memorable rock shows and a tight, full-length CD debut. Honey Tongue's on-stage electricity, impressive songwriting skills, rave reviews and radio/T.V. appearances have earned the band showcase performances during SXSW Music Conference 2003 (for GoGirlsMusic), NACA 2003 Northern Plains Region (National Association of Campus Activities), Nashville Music Conference 2002, EAT'M Music Conference 2002, Canada's New Music West 2001 (for the GRAMMY's), GoGirlsMusicFest 2001 and ROCKRGRL Music Conference 2000. | | Donnas Gold Medal CD (2004)
La Historia
$9.09 The Donnas: Brett Anderson (vocals, piano); Allison Robertson (guitar, background vocals); Maya Ford (bass guitar, background vocals); Torry Castellano (drums, percussion, background vocals). Following 2002's spitfire release Spend the Night, the Donnas return with a different drive on Gold Medal. Their earliest releases clung tightly to the Ramones' ethic of three power chords and a chunky rhythm, while Spend the Night riffed on tough and punchy Kiss licks and Cheap Trick-esque super pop, but Gold Medal veers yet again, heading into '70s psychedelia, hinting at a more introspective and melodic feel. A quieter, gentler Donnas? Yeah, kinda. Vocals run through vintage effects, swirling wah-wah riffs, chiming acoustic guitar, and laid-back vocals all give the music a more restrained and casual feel -- as if the band is less aggressive, less impulsive, and less "rawk." The first single, "Fall Behind Me," is one of the few that hark back to their older sound: a heavy harmonic riff (almost reminiscent of the Cult), double-tracked vocals, and a guitar solo by Donna R. (Allison Robertson) ...
