A two-disc anthology of their best work, La Historia confirms Caifanes' status as one of the most influential rock bands to emerge from Mexico. The song selections range all the way back from their 1987 debut to a pair of tracks recorded during an MTV Unplugged appearance in 1994. Ranging from the Cure-like post-punk of "Cuentame Tu Vida" to traditional Mexican folk songs, Caifanes demonstrate a wide-ranging variety. "La Negra Tomasa" meshes reggae and Afro-Cuban beats with new wave guitars, while "Quisiera Ser Alcohol" resembles a jazzy torch song. Even as the band explores different musical styles, they never stray from their gifted musicianship and knack for lovely melodies. Newcomers will be impressed by the band's range and musicianship, and longtime fans who will be just as pleased with the well-chosen song selection. For both groups, La Historia will be a superb selection. ~ Victor W. Saul Hernandez is the best composer of music in the History of LATIN rock. His words are very well put and the music is just excelent. If its rock you want in Spanish look no further than Jaguares or Caifanes, Mana, Enanitos Verdes, and SOME of La Ley.

On its sixth album, Brazil's most famous head-banging outfit takes a page from the nu-metal book but, more importantly, combines its brutal thrash-metal sound with indigenous music from its homeland, occasionally utilizing the percussion and chants of the country's Xavantes tribe to powerful effect. The biggest standouts are the lively, acoustic-guitar-driven "Itsari" and the epic closer "Canyon Jam," both improvisations with Xavantes musicians that make for welcome contrasts to the record's intense bombast. Elsewhere, Brazilian percussionist Carlinhos Brown drives the rhythm-laden "Ratamahatta," a track that exemplifies the quartet's distinctive brand of "tribal metal."
