| | New Order Movement CDs (1981) Collector's Edition; Remastered
From The Discworld CD music
$19.54 After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past. Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers.
From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End," MOVEMENT boldly states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid agenda. That Sumner is trapped ...

| | Beatles Rubber Soul CD (1965)
From The Discworld songs
$14.79 Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever. Virtually every aspect of the Liverpool quartet's incredibly diverse sound is in evidence here: the dark, irony-filled Dylanism ("Norwegian Wood," "Nowhere Man"), pop perfection ("In My Life"), the passion for classic tin pan alley balladry ("Girl," "Michelle"), and the love of good 'ol rock & roll music ("Drive My Car"). Peppered with nasty fuzz bass, exotic sitar, cartoonishly ...
| | Beatles Abbey Road CD (1969)
From The Discworld album
$14.79 ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970, but recorded in early '69).
After the laborious disorganization and infighting that characterized early 1969's LET IT BE sessions (as famously captured on film), the fractious four were willing to let George Martin take the reins and to work with him as a cohesive unit for the much more succinct production of their (and the decade's) swan song, ABBEY ROAD. The superb performances make the album an artistic high point for all members of the group. Paul ...

From The Discworld Music Review Average Rating: (1 out of 5 stars) Unlistenable As a huge Terry Pratchett fan I bought this album expecting the music to be on par with the brilliant music for the Discworld games. How wrong I was.
This is an unlistenable mishmash of cheesy synth-pop...and cheesy is the word. Take "The Shades Of Ankh-Morpork". If you know the books you will probably have an image of the Shades in your head and will probably have an idea of the kind of music that would fit the bill. Let me tell you , this is not it. It is an unbearable bubblegum pop song, sung by the singer who did the "Teletubbies" theme song. In fact, this song would be more appropriate on an infants' TV show then on a Discworld album.
That is the problem suffered by much of the album-the songs simply do not match up with their titles. "Unseen University", for example, should be dramatic and swirly, for example, to reflect the feel of that building from the books. Instead...more cheesy pop.
Apart from music that in no way realtes to the ethos of Discworld, the other unifying theme of the album is one of total self indulgence. In the sleeve notes it is noted that one of the tracks had five whole (synthesised) organs on it-just because Greenslade could. Nauseating.
Note that this review gives it one star. That one star goes to Terry Pratchett's amusing sleeve notes, not at all to the music. Submitted by a reviewer (Surrey, England) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
