This stellar tribute to British rock legends The Clash features 13 homages by a variety of artists.

It's no surprise that a band as revered as the Clash would generate a tribute CD. It's also understandable that many of the participants show a tendency toward faithful renditions. Clearly, no one wants to be known as the band that turned "Train in Vain" into a polka. However, the artists who dare to mess with these Clash-ics produce some interesting results.

Turning in workmanlike covers are such Clash-influenced outfits like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Rancid ("Rudie Can't Fail" and "Cheat" respectively), 311 and Third Eye Blind, while Silverchair comes closest to capturing the Clash's punky energy in their ragged, first-take version of "London's Burning." Clash drummer Topper Headon sits in with the Afghan Whigs as they revisit "Lost in the Supermarket," while Ice Cube and Mac 10, backed by members of Korn, dispense with melody and transform "Should I Stay or Should I Go" into--what else--a rap. Other radical re-workings include Cracker's honky-tonk "White Riot," replete with fiddle, and the standout track, Moby's elegiac, minimalist version of "Straight to Hell." Stripped down to Heather Nova's haunting vocals over a ghostly electronic wash, it becomes something rich, strange, and unexpected.

UK version ff The Clash tribute album fFeaturing two exclusive bonus tracks not found on any other version: "Rock The Casbah" by Pato Banton & Rankin Roger and "Tommy Gun" by Face To Face.

British edition includes two bonus tracks.
