Few pop song catalogs have been as underappreciated as that of the Carpenters. Though many of their best songs ("Rainy Days and Mondays," "We've Only Just Begun") were penned by equally underrated songwriter Paul Williams, pianist Richard Carpenter got his compositional licks in too, and it was his vocalist/drummer sister Karen whose sweet but unaffected vocal style cemented these tunes' popularity and helped place them in the '70s pop canon for all time.

Before the release of Rebel Riddim in 2007, Dog Boy mostly had made below-radar recordings with rap-metal group the Kottonmouth Kings and their Suburban Noize label as an accompanying vocalist and songwriter. With this first solo record, Dog Boy shakes off the angst-ridden confines of metal, bringing to the fore his pop sensibilities and reggae music background. Rebel Riddim's opening track, "Return of the One Drop," introduces the singjay's scruffy vocals and pays homage to the one-drop rhythm and the reggae of old. This first track, however, is a false start for the album, given that the remaining songs lean heavily towards alt pop/rock and reflect his punk influences, especially "She's Driving" and the title track that follow right after. He does hint at it in "Return of the One Drop": "punk rock changed my life, and reggae keeps me high/punk rock opened my eyes, and reggae keeps me wise." Despite the album's unevenness, Dog Boy transitions into these differing styles rather gracefully, whether it's with more rootsy tracks ("Daddy What Is War?"), reggae-pop love ballads ("Hold You"), or just pure dance-pop numbers ("Locked and Loaded"). On his second release 'Robots Are People Too', Synth Groove has taken his music and production techniques to the next level. This cd literally has it all. Buzzing, swirling and mesmerizingly cool synthesizers, strange voice effects, pounding drums, syn drums (remember those!), amazing sound, and most important of all, great electronic songs. Once again, this album is done entirely with synthesizers.The album's 7:33 minute opening track 'Futuristic Man' is reminiscent of the Flock of Seagulls but it's so much more than that. The song takes a few minutes to kick in and when it does it's tuneful and powerful. The instrumental 'March of the One Time Humans' features some of the best synthesizer sounds that Synth Groove has come up with to date. 'Please Stand By' is loaded with strange sci-fi voice effects and its eerie, slinky, bass line is a treat in itself. Synth Groove likes to use vintage synths and the next song 'Simulation On', is very 'old school' in sound and style. 'Download' is an instrumental track that was intended for the debut album and is classic Synth Groove. The next song 'Messages' is one of the best synthpop tracks on the album and has a great chorus. 'Extra Synthesizer Perception' is wonderfully weird and would make an excellent dance club track. 'It's An Alien World' and 'FM Generator' are both as smooth and cool as ice cream. Beautiful, spacey and otherworldly. The synth pumping 'Dead Of Night' comes blasting out of the speakers next and could have made a great Ultravox track back in the day. 'The Strange Tale of Dr. Vollin' is strange indeed and needs at least a half dozen listens to absorb all the sound and voice effects. Synth Groove pays tribute to Kraftwerk on 'Raised By Robots'.
