Argentina's Fito Paez is one of the few pop-rockers in the Latin arena to produce tunes with equal amounts of socially conscious grit and commercial viability. At times loosely associated with the progressive New Song movement, he has shared the stage on many occasions with such towering cancionistas as Mercedes Sosa. He's a fine singer and pianist, but it's clear on albums such as ABRE that his ramble-on flow is highly informed by his less than honey-voiced hero, Bob Dylan.
With its dulcet spirituality, radio-friendly sheen, and hard-pounding guitar and piano work, ABRE is his strongest effort since EL AMOR DESPUES DEL AMOR. Thick with ethereal sound filters and modulations, the title track is a soaring call for the enlightenment of humanity. Equally anthemic is "Al Lado del Camino," with its throaty organs, insistent, rolling guitars, and fervent account of a metaphysical rambler's life spent by the side of the road. "Es Solo una Cuestion de Actitud" is assisted in its unflinching positivity with a high-octane infusion of Tower Of Power horns and brawny guitar riffage. Non-Spanish speakers may be put off by the occasional derivative touch of blues-rock from El Norte, but there's plenty here to enjoy regardless.
Recorded at Right Track Studios, Buenos Aires, Argentina & Right Track Studios, New York, New York.

CMJ (5/22/00, p.31) - "...Solidifies his commercial viability as a student of the Beatles with an Argentine slant, while maintaining a 'rocanrol' appeal by the sheer power of his Dylan-esque poetry..." Abre CD music
$8.49 Though Morissette is known for songs driven by big, hard-hitting production, her larger-than-life sound translates surprisingly well to a stripped-down, acoustic-based approach. Backed by acoustic guitar, piano, and strings (and a tasteful rhythm section), Alanis scales down the ...
| | Who Quadrophenia CDs (1973)
Abre music CDs
$14.89 This 1996 digitally remastered reissue of QUADROPHENIA contains remixed versions of "The Real Me," "Quadrophenia," "Dr. Jimmy" and "The Rock." It comes with a 52-page booklet.
By the early 1970s, rock & roll had been around long enough to begin to examine its own past. In the States, this resulted in Sha Na Na, but in Great Britain, where the popular culture of the young was more complex and coded, the Who's QUADROPHENIA was the most powerful example of this nostalgic view. Reviews at the time focused primarily on the obscure psychological aspect of the story--supposedly, the four sides of the original double-album set are meant to examine the four sides of the main character's personality, each one represented by a different member of the Who. However, the most interesting aspect of QUADROPHENIA is its seamy ...

| | Randy Branch Long Black Car CD (2007)
Abre songs
$9.85 Singer/songwriter Randy Branch showcases all of his strengths on his new, full-length CD, Long Black Car. The rootsy new release contains 11 songs that touch on all of Branch's expansive musical borders, including the terrifically twangy title track as well as hardcore and hard-edged country, thought-provoking, meditative ballads and even a sweet taste of Texas swing.Long Black Car was recorded at Gintown Studios with producer Rick Carter (Rollin' in the Hay) at the helm and with musical support from members of Frankie Velvet and the Mighty Veltones.Branch, with his smooth, sometimes-gritty baritone and intelligent lyrics, is one of Alabama's most popular and respected performers. He has been playing music since the 1960s - inspired in part by his own dad, a guitar and mandolin player - and has also worked as a songwriter in Nashville.Randy's band Oakley Hill (remember them?) was popular on southeast college campuses from 1977-1984 and shared the stage with the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Alabama, Ricky Skaggs, Steppenwolf, Guy Clark, Johnny Paycheck, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Young and Mickey Gilley. While in Nashville as a writer in the mid-80s, he collaborated on songs with well-known writer Carmol Taylor, including the chart single "How'd You Sleep Without Me?", which is updated on Branch's exciting new collection. What they're ...
