Falta Amor is the Mexican pop/rock band's least noteworthy album by far -- musically, at least -- but it still has its moments and, most importantly, it established them as a promising act during the early '90s, with an exceptionally straightforward pop/rock sound for a Mexican band. In particular, "Rayando el Sol" is a highlight and established a template for the sort of emotional pop/rock hits that the band would rack up in the years to come. Unless you're a completist, you probably won't need to bother with Falta Amor. Its high points are well represented on the plethora of Maná compilations out there, the best of which are the Esencials volumes released in 2003. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Falta Amor album
$15.65 When a genre-defining group like Metallica, whose past albums have rocked the charts with virtually no airplay, enlists the aid of a hit-making producer like Bob Rock, the result is bound to be monumental. METALLICA, their sixth studio release, surpasses all expectations.
METALLICA is an extremely heavy album. It carries a presence, a huge, live sound different from that heard on their previous recordings. What once could not be tamed has been refined, resulting in a fuller, more powerful guitar sound in ...

Falta Amor CD music
$8.25 SUENOS LIQUIDOS won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Latin/Rock Alternative Performance.
As trippy and loose-limbed as the album art may be (echoes of Santana's ABRAXAS), SUENOS LIQUIDOS finds these rockeros Mexicanos creating an ever-more refined sound. It's a free-and-easy rock & roll that's been baked in the Yucatan sun, with all the fun of Bryan Adams, the drive of the Police and an unflinching love of the ballad. With a nylon-string guitar fill here or a harmonized vocal fadeout there, frontman Fher and drummer Alex Gonzalez display an impeccable production sense, enhancing the mood while keeping the mix clear and each instrument distinct.
Fher's gone and caught gypsy fever, with his dreamy, dust-throated crooning about a mermaid enchantress on "Hechicera." Lead guitarist Sergio Vallin provides fine shredding over the song's reggae-rock beat, a familiar Mana sound. "Un Lobo" and "Clavado" are pure chunky-riff fun, songs about the highs and lows of being lost in love. And who could resist all those sweet chorus harmonies? These chicos may be getting ...

| | Mana Donde Jugaran Los Ninos? CD (1994) New Edition
Falta Amor songs
$7.29 On DONDE JUGARAN LOS NINOS ("Where Will the Children Play?"), these pop-rockers from Mexico show that having a great time and a credible social conscience can indeed go hand-in-hand. Loaded with hits, this is surely one of the band's most celebrated, exciting albums. Their driving ragga-rock mixes with synth-laden pop, acoustic balladry and a youthful, Mexican romantic sensibility. Fher's light, breathy voice takes flight over Cesar "Vampiro" Lopez' (of later Jaguares fame) choppy, deliberate guitar-playing while Alex offers steady, tight drumming that's always full of little accents and subtleties.
The album opens with the party favorite, "De Pies ...

Falta Amor album
$13.85 Recorded live in August and September, 1994. Includes liner notes by Mana.
All songs written or co-written by Fher and/or Alex except "El Rey" (Jose Alfredo Jimenez).
In terms of live albums, Maná's En Vivo is exemplary. It's filled with hits, offers crystalline sound quality, and boasts remarkable band-audience rapport, highlighted by the numerous moments when the crowd sings along to the better-known songs. Fher Olvera is a captivating frontman, and it's him in particular who engages this lively crowd most. The band as a whole deserves mention too, though. It not only plays its many hits well, but it often gives the songs new life, extending them and letting them go on until they're truly finished. And regarding those hits, some of Maná's most beloved are here, including "De Pies a Cabeza," "Oye Mi Amor," "Rayando el Sol," "Como Te Deseo," and an acoustic performance of the absolutely beautiful "Vivir Sin Aire" saved for last. Granted, most of these songs are from the 1994 Donde Jugaran los Niños? album. In fact, pretty much every song from that album appears in the ...
| | Mana Cuando Los Angeles Lloran CD (1995)
Falta Amor CD music
$7.75 CUANDO LOS ANGELES LLORAN was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
Although stylistically similar to DONDE JUGARAN LOS NINOS, CUANDO LOS ANGELES LLORAN ("When the Angels Cry") is a relatively harder-rocking, stripped-down record for Mexican pop-rock outfit Mana. The sweet, atmospheric synth sounds of past records are pushed more to the background and Sergio Vallin joins the band as first-chair guitarist, with a piercing, heavy metal sound that shifts seamlessly between crunching chords and soaring, Van Halen-esque leads. Mana's members seem to gel more than ever as a distinct band here, and the result is some of the tightest songwriting and production in their discography.
"Como Un Perro Enloquecido" ("Like a Mad Dog") is pure fun, alternating between Police-style ragga rhythms and double-time, ...
