Directo '90 album
$10.15 The PLUS is that nearly half of these 15 songs are remixes of solo Boy George tracks. Some of the mixes are a bit unimaginative--the extended version of Culture Club's last single, 1986's "Move Away," merely elongates what's not really that great a song to begin with--but many are excellent. The dub version of "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me," previously available only on a Japanese EP, is a lost treasure, a bass-heavy reworking of a remarkable song made even more exciting by an unexpected and impressive toast by Jamaican dub wizard Papa Weasel. The ...
| | Ruben Blades Buscando America CD (1984)
Directo '90 CD music
$9.85 After honing his salsa chops in the 1970s in lengthy stints with the bands of Ray Barretto and Willie Colon, Panamanian Ruben Blades formed his own band, Seis del Solar. BUSCANDO AMERICA, Seis del Solar's first album, introduces Blades's unique fusion of salsa, rock, and Caribbean rhythms, and the full range of Blades' literate, witty lyrics and expressive vocal flair. Though the politically pointed angle of Blades's words will be lost on those with a language barrier (Blades sings only in his native Spanish), the inventive, accessible nature of his music should appeal to many.
Blades concocts a musical stew that includes Latin jazz ("Todos Vuelven"), reggae ("Desapariciones"), African folk ("Caminos Verdes"), and art music (the pell-mell narrative of "G.D.B.D."). The opening cut, "Decisiones," kicks off with a retro-'50s doo-wop intro before segueing into high-octane salsa. Remarkably, Blades pulls off his synthesis of styles with aplomb, remaining true to his Latin roots even while pushing and expanding his musical ...
| | Ruben Blades Escenas CD (1985)
Directo '90 music CDs
$9.85 Ruben Blades Y Seis Del Solar: Ruben Blades (vocals, percussion); Oscar Hernandez, Ricardo Marrero (keyboards); Eddy Montalvo, Ralph Irizarry, Louis Rivera, Robert Ameen (percussion); Cliff Carter, Dean Bailen (programming).
ESCENAS follows on the heels of the epic BUSCANDO AMERICA with another powerful, if dire, dose of Ruben Blades' socially-conscious salsa-pop, backed again by the dynamic Son Del Solar. The album clearly makes a crossover bid with guest appearances by Linda Ronstadt and Joe Jackson, as well as bilingual lyrics in the package. As the title suggests, the material here paints scenes from Blades' typically keen barrio perspective.
Opening ESCENAS on an introspective note is "Cuentas Del Alma," a moving portrayal of a mother's fear of the dark and endless pining for her departed husband. To the sound of synth-wails and a salsa-inflected pop beat, Blades intones with dreadful finality the words, "heart dues can never be paid in full." The dirge-like "Tierra Dura" ...
| | Aquarium CD (1997)
Directo '90 songs
$11.89 AQUARIUM isn't the place to turn if you're looking for introspective, soul-searching meditiations on the meaning of life and the universe. But if you like techno bubble gum this might just be a little slice of heaven. They love it in Denmark, where the album went quintuple platinum, and they love it in the clubs, because the mechanical, boppy, sing-songiness makes for the perfect dance music. "Happy Boys and Girls," the disc's opening track, is a perfect representation of the Aqua sound: "Be happy" squeal the little-girl backup singers. The drum machine kicks in, mechanical high-hat hissing away, and you can just see those European dance floors filling up with happy Danish boys and girls. This disc has a tongue-in-cheek feel to it, as if Aqua ...
| | Aquarius CD (2000) Enhanced CD
Directo '90 album
$12.79 Gliding above the seemingly kitschy Europop of Aqua is the angelic voice of Lene Nystrom, the band's most appealing element. At times, Nystrom seems to capture the sexiness of Madonna and the quirkiness of Bjork.
AQUARIUS opens with the Disneyish and aptly titled "Cartoon Heroes." Poking fun at country music, "Freaky Friday" weighs the realities of life's mishaps against the cliches of the genre. "Halloween" opens with an endearing B-horror movie reference, and the sometimes abrasive vocals of Rene Dif work perfectly as the song's villain. The mid-tempo groove of "Good Guys" is a refreshing departure from the monotony of 4/4 dance songs. Hidden among the walls of synthesizers, timpani, theremin, and other unexpected instrumentation are some undeniable catchy pop hooks, such as that of "Back From Mars." The Latin-flavored "Cuba Libre" adds some spice with flamenco guitar and percussion. "Bumble Bees" calls on Aqua's trademark brand of sexy metaphors. ...
