The uptempo Brazilian funk of Cidade Negra continues to improve, and on Quanto Mais Curtido Melhor they deliver the album of their career up to this point. Variety is the key, and they have finally figured out the fine art of utilizing different aspects of their own sound. It doesn't hurt that the music is much better this time around, reflecting the tastes of the group much more than the bland reggae-pop they were crafting before this point. There's still a taste of that here, but it is finely tempered with soul, samba, rap, and R&B. If there is any Cidade Negra album from the 90's to buy, this is the one that appeals to the widest audience and contains some of their strongest songwriting. ~ Bradley Torreano

The first album by Portland, Oregon's tongue in cheek lounge pop orchestra Pink Martini, SYMPATHIQUE, was originally released in 1997 on the band's own Heinz label. Although the album contains two originals by singer China Forbes and pianist Thomas Lauderdale, the title track and "Lullaby," the bulk of the album's 12 songs consists of new arrangements of loungy favorites like "Never On Sunday," "Que Sera Sera," "Brazil," and "Song of the Black Lizard," taken from the soundtrack of a Japanese cult film. Unlike contemporaries such as Combustible Edison, Pink Martini had the musical chops and heartfelt love of the style to keep the album from descending into snarky kitsch. In 2009, Heinz Records released the first ever vinyl edition of the album.
Recorded at Stiles Recording Studio, Portland, Oregon, from December 1996 to April 1997.

Saxophonist Michael Blake spent a month living in Vietnam with his wife and her family. Kingdom of Champa, which has six of his originals plus the traditional "Folksong," is his tribute to the country and the time that he spent in the exotic and troubled land. The music is often quite Asian-sounding, utilizing a wide variety of instruments (including bass clarinet, slide trumpet, bass flute, tuba, and cello) in unusual combinations with the emphasis often on ensembles rather than solos.
