Montand album
$11.89 This stately Iceland rock outfit took the alternative-music world by storm with its second album, AGAETIS BYRJUN--a haunting, eloquent, 76-minute instant classic. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language he calls "Hopelandic" (a combination of Icelandic and his own angelic calling), over the lyrical ebb and flow of feedback-drenched guitar, gushing keyboards, gently driving bass, and drums that crash like the surf of an alien ocean. After a droning beginning, the curtains suddenly part with "Svefn-G-Englar," revealing a sound as wide open and exhilarating as Iceland's landscape. Later, the mournful violin and slowly cascading beats of "Flugufrelsarinn" give way to ghostly horn sections, orchestral crescendos, stretches of silence, crashing dissonance, sad piano lines, and a Radiohead-esque dip into the realm of rock on "Olsen Olsen." The breathtaking scope and emotional richness of this outing turned Sigur Ros into an overnight success. Within a year of AGAETIS BYRJUN's release on the small British label Fatcat Records, the band went from obscurity to selling out major venues, scoring films, and signing with MCA, who re-released the album to even wider acclaim.
UK version of the Icelandic experimental/alternative act's international debut (their third album overall). Originally released in 1999, 'Agaetis Bryjun' is multi-platinum in their homeland. Includes the singles, 'Svefn-G-Englar' and 'Ny Batteri'. A brilliant record packaged in a digipak.
| | Hee Haw Gospel Quartet CDs (2006)
Montand CD music
$17.05 No kidding. Time Life has put together a fine 30-track, two-disc collection -- assembled from the original four on the Hee Haw label itself. Here are Grandpa Jones, Roy Clark, Buck Owens, and Kenny Price, moving through fine arrangements of gospel classics like "Dust on the Bible," "Shall We Gather at the River," "Just Over in Glory Land," "The Unclouded Day," "Amazing Grace," and "On the Jericho Road," just to name a few. These four cats could really sing together. And while it's true that the show was known for its cornpone humor, you'll find none of that here among these four musicians of stature and class. ~ Thom Jurek

| | Celtic Thunder Take Me Home CD (2009)
Montand songs
$14.29 The Celtic Thunder road show is a multigenerational extravaganza of Irish-flavored pop music designed to melt hearts. Their third album, culled from their 2009 show, focuses mainly on pop standbys like "Every Breath You Take" and "Wichita Lineman." While the uninitiated may not even suspect that the act is Irish, an emerald glint shines off the folkier numbers like "The Green Fields Of France" and "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)."
The Celtic show's third album focuses on old pop stand-bys.
Personnel: Neil Byrne (guitars, dobro, mandolin, background vocals); Plunkett McGartland (fiddle); Barry Kerr (flute, whistle, pipes, bodhran); Phil Coulter (keyboards); Conor McCreanor (double bass, bass guitar); ...
| | Gilberto Gil Gil E Jorge CD (1975)
Montand album
$12.45 GIL & JORGE pairs two of the most prominent figures associated with Brazil's late-'60s Tropicalia movement. Though Rio-based Jorge Ben focused primarily on fusions of samba and African music and steered clear of the overt political statements that led to Gilberto Gil's tangles with the Brazilian regime of the time, his propulsive guitar and easy vocals blend perfectly with the Bahia native's folk-rock ethos.
Essentially, this is a jam session par excellence; Gil and Ben face off with their voices and guitars and set the tape rolling. Entirely acoustic instrumentation gives the session a spare, organic sound, and the singers really let it hang out here, with scatting, call-and-response, and melodic and harmonic free association. The parameters are loose and free-flowing, and most of the songs roll on for 10 minutes or more, with plenty of improvisation. Ben's groovy "Taj Mahal" (a close melodic forebear of Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"), is one of the highlights, as are the exuberant "Morre O Burro, Fica O Homen," and the relentlessly chugging "Jurubeba." GIL & JORGE is a jewel in the significant discographies of both artists.
Includes liner notes by Gerald Seligman.

$32.85 | | Patrick Moraz Windows Of Time CD (1994) Remastered
Montand album
$15.05 Granted, Moraz's liner notes for "Windows of Time" have the whacked-out content and print quality of religious pamphlets left on bus station benches. But don't let the nutter packaging put you off the fine music inside. It's essentially an hour-long piano improvisation by Moraz, divided rather loosely into three suites, and interrupted solely by an occasional bloodcurdling whoop from the pianist. Some pieces work well, like the charging "Invocation," and while others dissolve into dissonant noodling. In the end, though, they all flow together in Moraz's inimitable fusion of dark Romanticism and bright Brazilian dance rhythms. He even briefly revisits two of his own classics, "The Best Years of Our Lives" and a renamed "Kaaru." For fans of his piano work -- and it's this work that has aged best out of his back catalog -- this an album well worth seeking out. ~ Paul Collins
Although well known for his virtuosity with electronic keyboards Patricks love of the piano is well known. These recordings are taken from a series of concerts performed by Patrick and feature improvised pieces. The music on this disc is the best material drawn from fourteen hours of performance ...
