When Ry Cooder went to Cuba in 1996 to collect top musicians from the island's pre-Castro musical heyday for a collaborative album, he could not have anticipated the phenomenal success of the final product. The BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB went on to win a Grammy and become the top-selling world music album of all time. In some ways the love child of Sade and Norah Jones, European sensation Ayo blends African pop and western soul influences into seductively mellow mood music. The daughter of a Nigerian father and a Romanian Gypsy mother born and raised in Germany, Ayo (whose name does mean "Joyful" in Yoruba) has a smoky voice and soulful delivery perfectly matched by the low simmer of jazzy arrangements built on African percussion, acoustic guitar, and old-fashioned funky organ grooves. One of the most successful of Blue Note's 'blue' period and an album that remains his finest work. Although his tenor sax occasionally grates, this is a brilliant example of late bebop. Supported by Bud Powell (piano), Kenny Clarke (drums) and Pierre Michelot (bass), the simple quartet sound coolly in control. 'Willow Weep For Me' is played with great beauty and 'A Night in Tunisia' is yet another well-crafted version. The wonderful bonus of 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' and 'Like Someone In Love' (from Powell's Alternate Takes) on the CD reissue puts this album in the first division.
