After a shaky start with the B-movie tinged When Debbie's Back From Texas, this album gets going with "Viewed From the Spire" and doesn't look back. "Crime," featuring avant-garde trumpeter Jon Hassell, and the acoustic "Little Star" (also included on the Romeo & Julliet soundtrack) are pristinely perfect. Nordenstam sings in a cutesy, girly way. Often it's difficult to make out her whimsical words. The music is dreamy, atmospheric, and at times, angelic. A choir is employed for "Little Star" and "Murder in Mairyland Park." Quite clearly this is an alternative album; if comparisons are to be made, let's just say that if there's a place with an interesting jukebox, Nordenstam's second release would sit nicely with David Sylvian's Brilliant Trees. Further gems shine through in "Something Nice" and "She closed Her Eyes," which closes with the sound of rain. ~ Kelvin Hayes
International edition of the Swedish singer/songwriter's 1994 sophomore album. Released three years after her debut (which was released under the name Stina), And She Closed Her Eyes finds Nordenstam toning down the soft jazzy sounds of her debut and adding an ethereal texture to the aural mix. Stina updates the quiet passion of Kate Bush with the atmospheric emotion of David Sylvian's acclaimed solo work. 12 tracks including 'Crime', which features avant-garde trumpeter Jon Hassell and 'Little Star', which was also available on the Romeo & Julliet soundtrack. Warner.

Option (3-4/95, pp.121-122) - "...Though admittedly not for the diabetic or overly cynical, this is a beautiful and oddly compelling recording."
Beauty lies in the eye of I Is depression beautiful? It can be, if you are the one listening in. Stina's music is simply that, depressing, yet so very much of what beauty is all about. Expieriences are things we all have, and she masterfully tells us her story. Submitted by bjeck (Quesnel, B.C.) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Marvellous Lulls Simple guitar tunes are maybe the kind of songs that fit Stinas voice the best way. She sings very quiet - very close to the microphone. It feels like she's whispering directly into your ears, wich give the music a very human feeling.
Silent, calm and enormously beautiful... Great musical quality, sometimes a bit jazzy... This is one of those albums you can listen to over and over again and it'll only get better. Submitted by a reviewer (Linköping) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
