| | Rose Tattoo Never Too Loud CD Rose Tattoo Discography of CDs
When AC/DC took over the world in the early '80s, an abundance of bands suddenly appeared that were deemed "copycat acts" -- Heaven, Krokus, Rose Tattoo, etc. But in the latter act's case, the group had been around nearly as long as AC/DC -- even coming up through the same club circuit in Australia. While they never caught on stateside, Rose Tattoo (led by tattooed, chrome-domed frontman Angry Anderson) did build a sizable following in Europe, and of course, back home in the land down under. With most of their albums only available in the U.S. via import, your best bet may be to try tracking down a compilation, and the double-disc set Never Too Loud is a dandy. Spanning the group's career, this 37-track collection contains it all, including two of their best-known tracks, "Branded" (which received quite a few airings in 2004 on VH1 Classic's Metal Mania show) and "Nice Boys" (which was later covered by Guns N' Roses on their G N' R Lies set). But of course, there was more to this hard-rockin' band than those two tracks, and you get it here in truckloads -- "Tramp," "Scarred for Life," "One of the Boys," "We Can't Be Beaten," etc. And longtime fans who already own it all may still want to check out Never Too Loud, as it includes several rare live recordings from the BBC, as well as an extensive band history in the CD booklet (as told by Anderson). ~ Greg Prato

| | Deep Purple Burn (Expanded & Remastered) CD (1974) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded & Remastered
Never Too Loud CD music
$5.99 The first Deep Purple album to feature Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale, resulted in a much more bluesy effort all round. Coverdale's throaty roar, combined with Hughes' soaring vocal, made for a heartfelt, rootsy record. 'Might Just Take Your Life' was a hit single, and the album featured a series of extended jams, which worked most spectacularly with the elongated 'Mistreated', later resurrected by Coverdale as a live favourite with Whitesnake. The title track and 'Lay Down, Stay Down' gave vent to their more familiar refrains and emphasized the strength of their songwriting.
The departure of vocalist Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover seemed to rejuvenate Deep Purple, and 1974's Burn was a huge improvement over their previous effort, the lackluster Who Do We Think We Are. In an interesting twist, new recruits David Coverdale and ex-Trapeze bassist Glenn Hughes share lead vocals on virtually every track: an enviable tag team, as both possessed exceptional pipes. The ...

| | Christy Doran Corporate Art CD (1992) (Import)
Never Too Loud songs
$15.09 This quartet date by guitarist Christy Doran, bassist Mark Helias, drummer Bobby Previte, and saxophonist Gary Thomas may have been recorded in Europe by Stefan Winter, but its feel is utterly New York. Doran's playing is far more on the jazz-rock than avant tip here, giving the entire proceeding a feeling of that beautiful, edgy walk between composition and improvisation. Thomas -- normally an outside player -- reins himself in as a soloist in order to focus on the sometimes wondrous ensemble playing at the heart of the disc. Each member of the band writes on this set and it's obvious that the groove comes from within. It's knotty, sometimes intense, and often complex, such as on the opener "Blood Sugar," and on Doran's "Heitere Gelassenheit," where staggered arpeggios intersect with scalar riffs ...
| | Jarabe De Palo Un Metro Cuadrado 1M2 CDs (2005) (Import) Canada
Never Too Loud album
$10.69 Consistency was what Jarabe de Palo frontman Pau Dones was going for on Un Metro Cuadrado 1m2, nominated for a 2005 Latin Grammy. "People should be able come to us just like they can to a painting by Picasso or a movie by Almodóvar, knowing beforehand what to expect," he explained to the press in his native Spain at the start of a promotional tour. But there's a fine line between consistency and redundancy, and much of Un Metro Cuadrado falls disappointingly in the latter camp. It's too bad because there is so much to love about Jarabe de Palo's signature sound, an appealing mishmash of Caribbean, African, flamenco, and blues styles. Here, though, the bad songs suffer from the monotonous harmonic structures and relentlessly chirpy lyrics Dones has been stuck on since the group's well-established fan base gobbled up ...
