| | Rose Tattoo Never Too Loud CD - Import Rose Tattoo Discography of CDs
Deluxe 2CD Set-40 Tracks.
Personnel: Rose Tattoo. When AC/DC took over the world in the early '80s, an abundance of bands suddenly appeared that were deemed "copycat acts" -- Heaven, Krokus, Rose Tattoo, etc. But in the latter act's case, the group had been around nearly as long as AC/DC -- even coming up through the same club circuit in Australia. While they never caught on stateside, Rose Tattoo (led by tattooed, chrome-domed frontman Angry Anderson) did build a sizable following in Europe, and of course, back home in the land down under. With most of their albums only available in the U.S. via import, your best bet may be to try tracking down a compilation, and the double-disc set Never Too Loud is a dandy. Spanning the group's career, this 37-track collection contains it all, including two of their best-known tracks, "Branded" (which received quite a few airings in 2004 on VH1 Classic's Metal Mania show) and "Nice Boys" (which was later covered by Guns N' Roses on their G N' R Lies set). But of course, there was more to this hard-rockin' band than those two tracks, and you get it here in truckloads -- "Tramp," "Scarred for Life," "One of the Boys," "We Can't Be Beaten," etc. And longtime fans who already own it all may still want to check out Never Too Loud, as it includes several rare live recordings from the BBC, as well as an extensive band history in the CD booklet (as told by Anderson). ~ Greg Prato

| | Christy Doran Corporate Art CD (1992) (Import)
Never Too Loud
$15.09 /Mark Helias/Bobby Previte/Gary Thomas. Personnel: Christy Doran (guitar); Mark Helias (electric bass); Bobby Previte (drums); Gary Thomas (tenor saxophone, flute). Recorded at Bauer Studios, Ludwigsburg, Germany between April & June 1991. Personnel: Christy Doran (electric guitar); Mark Helias (electric bass); Bobby Previte (drums). Recording information: Bauer Studios, Ludwigsburg, Germany (04/30/1991-06/23/1991). This quartet date by guitarist Christy Doran, bassist Mark Helias, drummer Bobby Previte, and saxophonist Gary Thomas may have been recorded in Europe by Stefan Winter, but its feel is utterly New York. Doran's playing is far more on the jazz-rock than avant tip here, giving the entire proceeding a feeling of that beautiful, edgy walk between composition and improvisation. Thomas -- normally an outside player -- reins himself in as a soloist in order to focus on the sometimes wondrous ensemble playing at the heart of the disc. Each member of the band writes on this set and it's obvious that the groove comes from within. It's knotty, sometimes intense, and often complex, such as on the opener "Blood Sugar," and on Doran's "Heitere Gelassenheit," where staggered arpeggios intersect with scalar riffs to form a kind of contrapuntal melody line. But there are wonderfully elegiac and gently swinging tunes as well, such as the flute-driven swing in Thomas' "Chiaroscuro" or the languid tempos of Helias' "21" and "Bass Minotaur." Helias also offers a jazz-funk workout with "Skin," with furious basslines driving riffed-up guitars and a bleating saxophone that stays in the pocket. The album closes with Previte's beautiful nocturne "Theme for W.," where Thomas and Doran weave around one another slowly and purposefully to erect a floating melody that seems to float and hover while actually moving toward a complex harmonic architecture with a controlled dynamic. ~ Thom Jurek This ...
