The second and final studio recording by Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher's neo-Cream trio reins in the playing to focus more on songwriting. The material is a virtual grab bag of blues-rock styles, moving from driving rockers ("What's Going On," "I'll Remember") and basic boogies ("Morning Sun," "If I Don't Sing I'll Cry") to a bottleneck blitz ("Eat My Words") and a pair of acoustic ballads. There's a pronounced jazzy tinge to his spiky guitar and never-again-heard alto sax on the slow blues of the title track and "It's Happened Before, It'll Happen Again," the latter giving the Richard McCracken-John Wilson rhythm section a chance to stretch out and swing fluidly. The lyrics, never a Gallagher strong suit, are pretty simplistic, but the chorus hooks do stick. It could all have added up to one big eclectic mess, but for the often one-dimensional, sometimes ham-fisted Gallagher, the laudable variety turns On the Boards into the high point of his recording career. ~ Don Snowden Taste On The Boards Songs On The Boards Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) The Rory blueprint. I first heard this album (my friend's brother had it) in the early seventies. I had no idea about Rory Gallagher (or Taste). All I knew was, this album rocked! From the opener on, Rory's wide ranging influences made for an exciting and varied ride. His blues based stuff burned ("What's Going On", "Morning Sun" etc ...), while jazz ("It's Happened Before ...") and folk ("See Here") equally impressed. In many ways, this was the high-water mark for Rory's creativity - you can sense his youthful enthusiasm and lack of restraint. After this his solo stuff became (slightly) less adventurous, and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, it's always interesting to reflect on "the artist as a young man". Essential listening for Rory fans! Submitted by mark.richards.99 (Sydney, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

On The Boards album
$6.69 Poised somewhere between post-hippie hard rock and prog, Trapeze was an early exponent of the heavy, blues-based sounds that would become de rigeur in early-to-mid-1970s rock. At the same time, the band had its artful side, with dynamics that paid attention to atmospheric ...
| | Rory Gallagher Deuce CD (1971) Germany; Remastered
On The Boards CD music
$9.39 Released in November 1971, just six months after his solo debut, Rory Gallagher's second album was the summation of all that he'd promised in the wake of Taste's collapse, and the blueprint for most of what he'd accomplish over the next two years of recording. Largely overlooked by posterity's haste to canonize his next album, Live in Europe, Deuce finds Gallagher torn between the earthy R&B of "Used to Be," a gritty blues fed through by some viciously unrestrained guitar playing, and the jokey, country-billy badinage of "Don't Know Where I'm Going," a too-short snippet that marries Bob Dylan to Ronnie Lane and reminds listeners just how broad Gallagher's sense of humor was. Reflecting the laid-back feel of Rory Gallagher, "I'm Not Awake Yet" is a largely acoustic piece driven as much by Gerry McAvoy's gutbucket bass as by Gallagher's intricate playing; "There's a Light", too, plays to Gallagher's sensitive side, while stating his mastery of the guitar across a ...

On The Boards songs
$9.39 Reissue of debut album from blues-rock act featuring Rory Gallagher. Originally released in 1969. 1992 release. Standard jewelcase.
The fact that they, like so many late-'60s contemporaries, were molded in the image of Cream has often been cited to diminish the stature of Irish power trio Taste. But, all things being equal, it's impossible to dismiss their fine eponymous debut based solely on obvious source of inspiration, nor, by any means, the singular talents of the band's creative and performing focal point, vocalist and guitarist Rory Gallagher -- barely 20 years of age upon its release in 1969. After opening with the menacing staccatos and power chords of the forward-looking, proto-metal classic "Blister on the Moon," Taste turn right back around and indulge their retro-fueled Brit-blues influences with a bottleneck run through Leadbelly's "Leavin' Blues" -- a show of contrasts that speaks volumes to the breadth of Gallagher's instrumental versatility. The blues keep coming with the guitarist's self-penned showcase "Sugar Mama" and a more restrained acoustic "Hail," then the hard rock fires are stoked once again with "Born on the Wrong Side of Town" -- a track whose regional folk music accents did much to foment Gallagher's enduring status as a blue-collar, Emerald ...
| | Free Tons Of Sobs CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
On The Boards album
$12.99 TONS OF SOBS is the 1969 remastered reissue by U.K. rockers Free and includes "Worry," "Walk In My Shadow," and "I'm A Mover," and includes eight bonus tracks recorded live at BBC Sessions.
Although Free was never destined to scrape the same skies as Led Zeppelin, when they first burst out of the traps in 1968, close to a year ahead of Jimmy Page and company, they set the world of British blues-rock firmly on its head, a blistering combination of youth, ambition, and, despite those tender years, experience that, across the course of their debut album, did indeed lay the groundwork for all that Zeppelin would embrace. That Free and Zeppelin were cut from the same cloth is immediately apparent, even before you start comparing the versions of "The Hunter" that highlight both bands' debut albums. Where Free streaks ahead, however, is in their refusal to compromise their own vision of the blues -- even at its most commercial ("I'm a Mover" and "Worry"), Tons of Sobs has a density that makes Zeppelin ...
